This year, my family (husband and grown, and almost grown daughters) all decided not to exchange gifts for Christmas, but rather go on a "family mini-vacation weekend".
WE COULD NOT OF MADE A BETTER DECISION!!
We stayed at the Eagle Harbor Inn (the "Sumac" Cottage) and were very pleased.
The two-bedroom suite was clean, comfy and PERFECT in size, for the five of us! The loft bedroom for the girls was perfect, it had a queen bed and a twin in the loft "alcove", very cozy. Not to mention their OWN bathroom, much needed with three daughters! Our bedroom was very comfy with the double faced fireplace and jacuzzi (which all the girls used in their bathing suits). I don't understand the other previous complaints about the beds, I loved our bed with the great linens and perfect firmness (to each his own, i guess) The kitchenette was great for late-night snacks during movie watching, drinks, and morning mini-breakfasts. My only compainant was...that we could not take advantage of the "breakfast basket" option usually offered, due to the holiday short staff. (oh well, next time!)
The Inn/room was a welcome sight after the drive up from Chicago through VERY thick, nighttime fog!
The next morning we enjoyed Sunday brunch at "Alexander's", very yummy! Reasonably priced at 14.95 a person (considering the offerings, seafood newburg, salmon with crab hollandaise, swedish meatballs, strawberry/blue cheese salad, eggs benedict, omelettes to order, mimosas, etc.)
We then headed to Fish Creek, to watch (dressed in our blue & orange Bears regalia) the Bears/Packers game at the "Bayside Tavern". "Bill" the bartender was great, and played along with Bear/Packer rivalary in good fun! By the way...final score...Bears-35/Packers-7!!!!! DA BEARS!!!
We took advantage of the perfect snowfall the next day. We rented tubes from "Nor-Door Sport and Cycle" (the employee named "Stretch" could not have been nicer) and headed for "Hill #17" at the Peninsula Sate Park. Very fun! We then returned back to the inn lobby and enjoyed the afternoon homebaked goodies and warm apple cider. Lynn, the weekend hostess was so gracious and helpful answering all our questions and to giving suggestions as to what would be open for the Christmas weekend.
We also took an awesome carriage ride from "Mayberry Carriages". John, our carriage driver/guide was entertaining and gave us tips, as to where the "locals" go and where to avoid (tourist-trap wise). It was a perfect Christmas Eve thing to do!!!
It was truly a "Norman Rockwell Christmas" scene.
We ended the trip with Christmas Eve dinner at the"Mission Grill". Very yummy, great service, beautiful restaurant. A definite "special occasion" place. The restaurant was transformed from an old country church (how appropriate).
We headed home Christmas late morning. Just an awesomely perfect holiday!
This was our second time in Door County and we are definitely hooked!! WE WILL BE BACK!!
