I have so many wonderful things to say about the Oscar Hanson House that I don't even know where to begin....
My boyfriend and I stayed for 2 nights in the Cambridge Room in February of 2012. We were immediately greeted like we were old friends by Duke & Mary Jane, the proprietors. They are genuinely kind people, who know the art of being warm, welcoming hosts, but also giving you your privacy.
The house is extraordinary. Intricate architectural details abound, with traditional, cozy decor. We were there in the winter, but we look forward to returning in the summer when Mary Jane's gorgeous gardens are in full bloom, so we can enjoy those as well.
The Cambridge Room is lovely & inviting with plenty of natural light. The attention to detail that the proprietors provide is superior to your average B&B: Electric fireplace with remote, Bose sound system, flat screen TV with DVD player (and plenty of movies on DVD to watch), remote battery-operated candles, a sound machine for sleeping, 2 common area Keurigs, and a breakfast that is out of this world. Everything was impeccably clean, as well. The bathroom in the Cambridge Room is to die for: Wall to wall Travertine tile, a walk in shower with dual heads, a huge, 6-jet jacuzzi tub, a TV and a refrigerator. I could live in that bathroom.
The breakfast is amazing, and Duke & Mary Jane will accommodate any food allergies you may have. There is a "full" breakfast on weekend mornings, and a "simpler" breakfast during the week. But even the "simpler" breakfast goes above and beyond, in my opinion. Saturday morning our "full" breakfast was fresh waffles with strawberries, homemade whipped cream, bacon, poached pears with raisins, homemade pain de chocolat, orange juice and fresh coffee. On Sunday our "simpler" breakfast was a large basket filled with fresh granola, yogurt, milk, homemade apple bread, fruit and sparkling juice.
The only negative I have to say is that the bed was hard and kept me up half the night (I prefer a plush mattress). For the caliber and luxury appeal of this particular B&B, I had hoped for higher-end bath products and robes in the bathroom, as well. I would count those as my particular preferences though.
There are limited things to do in Cambridge, but Madison is a quick 25-minute drive away. Again, we were there in winter, but when we go back in the summer, I am looking forward to checking out Lake Ripley in Cambridge, as well.
We will be counting the days until we to return to the Oscar Hanson House.
