“The $169.00 room where the shower's did not work!”

I checked in the night before, asked for a 4:00 am wake-up call, was going to shower but could not get the shower to work at all, I reported this to the desk, was told they could give 10% discount..by the day shift manager, I told her I shouldn't have to pay period. I would welcome a call from the owners or managers at higher level or E-Mail..

Room Tip: Ck shower first, stay away from elevator's they are noisey

“Nice hotel, dull casino”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

Stayed at this hotel right after Christmas 2011. Checked in early (@2pm) with minimal wait. Hotel desk and Player's club are the same spot, so I can't imagine what the wait would be if it was busy.

Hotel was sold out of king bedded rooms so we got a 2 Queen. Nice room - "island" motiff is a bit outdated, but it was muted, so not too bad. Bathroom was very nice with a sunken vessel-type sink and higher-end looking faucet (even though I don't think it was a Kohler).

On the down side, walls were VERY thin. We got to partake in the couple next door's early morning argument. Not a great way to wake up. Also, there were not enough places to plug in. Bathroom had two outlets for coffee maker, lighted make-up mirror, and hairdryer (guess I'm the only person who requires all three of these at the same time). Didn't see any outlets on the walls or in lampbase to recharge my phone either. Odd.

Overall, a nice hotel attached to a dull casino. Seemed very understaffed and empty for supposedly being sold out.

“Casino and Racetrack”

I was a bit hesitant about heading to Wheeling island after reading all of the negative reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised. The hotel was VERY nice (rooms were spacious and well-decorated), casino was a typical casino, and the dog track was great. They are refurbishing the casino, so there are some areas that are roped off while they are building. I didn't find the place overly dirty. By the evening the complimentary drink bars were a bit messy with cups and ice scattered (blame that on the messy, sloppy patrons!) but the staff cleaned up as best as they could keep up with the crowds.

I have a huge issue with smoke so I was worried about the smoke in the casino, but although I could smell it, it wasn't a major factor. There are non-smoking areas, and the indoor track seating for the dog track was non-smoking, so that was nice.

Food was average. We considered the buffet several times but it was a bit pricey ($16.95 for dinner) and the food didn't look very enticing, so we saved our money and just ate at one of the places in the food court.

They had a very small number of table games and nearly all of them were Blackjack. Only one Three-Card Poker table and it was always jammed, as was the Craps and Roulette tables. Hopefully when the renovations are finished they will add more tables. Of course, there are a ridiculous number of slot machines. That is what this place is known for...a lot of them were penny slots (but the minimum lines you could play on most of them were 40 so in essence they really were $.40 slots!).

The Players Club card is really worthless - 2 days of gambling equaled about a dollar off one meal. It did give is 10% off of our room cost, so that was something...and since it is a free card it doesn't hurt to sign up for one.

Overall it was a nice getaway. It isn't Vegas, but it's decent and clean and a good value for the money.

“A hotel and casino on an island in the ghetto”

Stayed here several times and if it was located somewhere other than the middle of a neighborhood that's falling down in a city that's falling down I would rate it higher. Rooms are clean, food at the Breezeway Cafe was good and the staff was nice. The lobby smelled like mildew and everywhere you go it stinks like cigarette smoke. All in all the goods and the bads average out to make this an average place to stay.

“Midweek Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

For three years we have been trying to get into this hotel, we finally made it and now we understand why it takes so long. Their rooms are spacious, comfortable, and relaxing. Very up to date colors, the beds are wonderful, the bathroom is modern, and the room is very clean. The best opportunity to get a room is during the week, weekends are booked quickly. During the week, you have better opportunities of playing your games in the casino with less waiting. And if you have never been to the casino, it is very comfortable, good service, good food, and friendly associates. I will not promise that you will be a winner, but it will be a great getaway.

Room Tip: We were on the third floor, did not hear noise from adjacent rooms.
