“Friendly staff but dirty room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

My family stayed at this hotel for a NYE wedding. The front desk staff was very friendly and check in was easy. The hotel was full between the wedding guests, the holiday weekend and local oil and gas men looking for rooms. We live locally but decided to stay the night to avoid driving on NYE.

The hotel has been open for ever but has undergone several name / ownership changes in recent years. We received a room with two small full size beds and it came to about $122 for the night.

The room appeared clean at first except for the carpet but when my young child dropped a toy and it rolled under the edge of the bedspread, we found a lifesaver and fork laying there so obviously the sweeper had not been run in quite some time! The room was incredibly hot and the AC did not seem to be working, nor did the window open - it was miserable to sleep in. The walls were very thin and we could here lots of conversations and people moving about all night and we were up on the 4th floor. The TV was small and older and the shower leaked into the tub so the water pressure was poor. The breakfast consisted of some fruit, packaged sweet rolls, coffee and orange juice.

Overall for the price and the size of this small town we were dissapointed with our stay. Wheeling has several newer (Springhill) or recently updated (Hampton) hotels so if you are coming to visit, we recommend those over the McClure.

Room Tip: Rooms with two double beds have very small full size beds in them, one desk and one tv stand. Not a...

“A Good Bet for Wheeling”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

Don’t know how often you’re likely to find yourself in Wheeling, West Virginia. It’s an interesting city with fascinating architecture and a great old bridge — and seemingly not enough people to fill it up. We stayed at the McLure House Hotel on Market Street which also seems to go by the moniker, the Clarion.

It’s a sturdy place, like the city, that struggles a little to keep up — but the rooms were clean and comfortable and the folks there very pleasant and helpful. Good rates, too. Located right in the middle of the city. Had a wonderful dinner at the Metropolitan Citi Grill, a place that could earn top stars in any city at all.

“Has seen better days. We will not be back.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2011

We attended a wedding and our family had three rooms. The problems we encounted were numerous. First, the a/c either ran all the time (freezing) or did not run (hot). The wall were thin and the noise of slamming doors and running water was very loud. We asked for queen beds and all three rooms had what looked like small full beds. The wall paper was coming off at the seams and they had used staples to hold them down. The toliet was louder than an airlane flush. The carpet was in dire need of cleaning, The TV was an old CRT and the picture was very poor. The breakfast consisted of some fruit, packaged sweet rolls, coffee and orange juice. The only nice thing about the Mclure was the entrance and it was close to the wedding receiption. Since the hotel said they were full we could not request another room.
I noticed that most of the good reviews were from previous years. I would not recommend staying at this Hotel.

Room Tip: If you want a large bed, I guess you need to request a King bed. However, it may be a small queen.

“Disgusting.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

Yellow stains on the sheets, trash unemptied, no toilet paper, floor unvacuumed, and the ice machine was broken. We asked for a new set of sheets and came back to the room 3 hours later to find they had still not been changed. Called again and waited 30 minutes, never heard from any staff members. Service was terrible, we were completely ignored and our room had not been cleaned whatsoever since previous guests.

“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2010

Don't listen to the other reviews. This hotel is wonderful. My room was very large with two beds and beautiful furnishings. Everything was impecably clean and tasteful. The bathroom was so large I was surprised...you could actually move and and get ready with out walking into the main room. I couldn't have been happier. There was a large window that partialy opened for getting that fresh morning air. No the view wasn't great but I had a mirrored building in view that reflected the golden sunset and sunrise which I loved...Also the shower had great water preasure that felt good after long hot days..
And if that wasn't enough my car was in a covered garage which kept the sun from beating on it. The breakfast in the lobby was a great added touch. The staff was incredable with giving directions...Chris helped me find North Wheeling and the entire staff was as nice and helpful as you could want. I was treated and felt like I was in a 4 star hotel. I love Wheeling the people, architechture, history and walking for hours seeing all the history and people. Most people I talked to were so proud of the city they lived in and were so ready to tell you all about the city and history. Stayng at the McClure allowed me great access for walking or driving anywhere in the area. I want to thank the staff of the McClure for helping me have a great vacation. I will be back and I hope everyone coming to Wheeling stays at the Mcclure and has the same experience I did. Rhonda Marie Rose
