“Not impressed for what we paid.”

We were looking for a quick trip close to home...we thought this would be a good choice. We booked a "premium" king room with a fireplace in the new part of the lodge by the spa. We decided to spend more money to get a better room to relax. When we arrived in the room..I was very suprised that this was the new section of the hotel. Everything seemed very beat up and outdated. The room was spacious...bathroom had a nice shower and bathtub. It was also nice to have a refrigerator. As we turned the lights on...we saw cookie crumbs ALL over the carpet. It was as if housekeeping hadn't even vacuumed once. I then pulled the comforter back to show hair all over the sheets. We went to the desk to let them know...and the desk clerk was apologetic...but it took 15 minutes to get us another room(i didn't want to wait for them to clean this room). The desk clerk did fix it, but I was suprised that there was no manager present to aplogize. They gave us another room down the hall..but it was a handicapped accessible room...so there was no bathtub. We then had a late lunch in the glassworks grill...which was ok. My husband had a burger and fries, and the fries were cold. So that meant either the fries were not cooked to order, or the order had been under the heat lamp too long. The breakfast was ok...it was nice to have a fresh waffle. The other items in the chaffing dishes had been there for a while, so they didn't look too appetizing. The next day we ate dinner the the glassworks grille again...and was disgusted by the bartenders. Both ladies were chomping on gum behind the bar..with their mouths wide open. They also were handling food...as they were chomping on gum. (spit on food isn't very sanitary). I did see some manager presence, but it seemed like they were more interested in pleasing the large group that was there for a conference. Maybe I had high expectations...but when we spent over $550.00...I expected more. We will not be returning to this location. I have worked at hotels in the past...and would have at least done something for a guest that had checked into a room that wasn't clean.

Thank you very much for your feedback on your recent stay and please accept our apologies for our missteps. Our Housekeeping and Food & Beverage divisions both have very high standards so it is disappointing that we did not live up to them during your stay. Your experience with our bartenders and wait staff in Glassworks is not typical and I can assure you that your comments will be directed to our chef and used as a training tool. I would also like to take the opportunity to apologize for the lack of housekeeping care that was taken in your room. Again, our sincerest apologies, and we hope that you will visit us again in the future so that you can enjoy a true Oglebay experience.

“Great for a Family Getaway Weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

My family goes to Oglebay occasionally for a little weekend vacation, and we've stayed here every time. We always stay in the old section because it is cheaper. The rooms are clean and comfortable. In the summer, the balcony/patio attached to your room is a great place to relax at night after a big meal in the restaurant, which has a pricey but excellent buffet. The lodge has a great pool and hot tub, fitness center, and some ping pong tables that are always fun. The lounge has a piano and game boards [get the pieces at the front desk]. There are also organized activities throughout the day. There is a FABULOUS buffet breakfast included in the price, and you should not miss it.

At Christmas and during the winter, it is so much fun to go to dinner and see the lights. There are also hot drinks and cookies every night. It's the perfect way to relax and enjoy the holiday spirit! In January we've also gone to the train show, which is quite large and interesting.

In the summer, there are so many things to do. The lodge has activity wristbands at an additional cost that are a great deal! They include admission to the zoo and laser show, outdoor pool, mini golf, par 3 golf, glass museum, mansion, etc. The grounds are beautiful, and it's a great trip for families of all ages.

“Great Winter Retreat”

We spend a weekend in one of the cabins almost every winter. You have full access to the lodge when you rent a cabin so it is the best of both worlds. The cabins offer privacy, have huge stone fireplaces and are great for a family/friends getaway. There are plenty of activities both indoor and outdoor. Ex. indoor pool, skiing, horseback riding, hiking, ping pong, sledding, etc.

Room Tip: Make sure you get one of the old cabins. Much more rustic and makes you feel like you are back in t...

“Luxurious Rooms in Wilson Lodge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

My husband and I stayed in the new part of Wilson Lodge in a king bed room on the night of 1/1/12. The room was very nice, with a nice fireplace, and the bathroom was great - lots of room, a tub and a separate shower, two sinks, lots of nice towels, robes, and a towel warmer! Our package included a buffet breakfast, which had plentiful food and was very nice. The entire lodge was beautifully decorated for Christmas, and there was free evening entertainment. The buffet dinner was a separate purchase, but was also very good. We also enjoyed driving through the light displays.

Room Tip: The new part of the lodge is very nice; I don't know about the older part.

“A Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

We had to attend a funeral in powhatan point and there were no hotel rooms available in the area. ( this was in Dec) I had no idea the resort was there.... just happened to find it on the internet. We had a king room with a fireplace and it was wonderful!! The resort was decorated for christmas and we also drove through the festival of lights. I would love to go back when we have more time to enjoy the area and all the ammenities. The spa looked wonderful.....as did the indoor pool. We did enjoy a steak dinner in the dining room and later had a drink at the pub. The only disappointment was the pub stopped serving food at 10 pm.... other family members were wanting to eat a late snack. I will definately go back and enjoy this beautiful resort!!!

Room Tip: The fireplace rooms are amazing.
