“Arrogant Staff”

My wife and I had made a reservation for 2 nights (Fri nt & Sat nt) for a 1 bedroom cabin. I had been told there was only 1 cabin available for both nights and I had even enquired about the horseback riding on Sat and Sun. So I made the reservation. We checked in late Friday and quickly started noticing things were not as expected. Some of the lights did not work, the heating/AC system did not work, there were cigarette burn holes in the couch, and some of the outter window panes had been shattered. We had just 1 space heater to heat the entire place.

We spent the first morning hiking up the mountain. When we got to the top we could also see our cabin and there were 3 cars in the driveway. When we got back to our cabin, the entire place had been emptied, all of our belongings were gone! We drove to the office and were told that we had missed the 11am checkout and our stuff had been moved to storage in another building. When I mentioned our reservation was for 2 nights I was rudely told I was wrong and that I must be mistaken. A woman spoke up and said she had been the one that talked to me on the phone and took my reservation (a lie since a guy took my info) and that I had only mentioned staying 1 night.

We were offered another "better" cabin for the same rate for the 2nd night, but upon inspection it was in far worse shape. We gathered our things, checked out, and left without getting any sort of apology. The staff yelled at us in the restuarant in front of other customers and told us the mix-up was our fault.

Also, the log book they use to right down our name and CC info for the reservation was laying open in the office (which is in the middle of a restuarant) for all to see. Within 48 hours I had fraudulent charges on my credit card. Coincidence? You decide.

“"Worst campground ever"”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

Our family has stayed at this campground for the past 20 years and after this Labor Day trip we plan to NEVER return to this dump. We had a total of 12 people in our party. 3 with campers and 1 in a tent. 4 children were also a part of the group. Our "neighbors" were very polite and inviting people from another part of West Virginia. We spent the evening talking with them and having smores with the children. We had no real problems the first night that we were there except for the people down the way was playing very loud music well into the night. (even after 12am). Again the day was wonderful with us again spending a wonderful time with our new neighbors and all the kids playing together. (They had 3 children in there group.) That night we all sat together by the campfire and shared wonderful life stories. Again down the way the music had started along with many other vehicles that pulled in that were not staying in the campground. A full blown party was underway. The owner Shirley Yokum's grandsons were part of this party. For those who have never been there, these are the "cowboys" that have the horse rides to the top of Seneca Rocks. After many beers and who knows what else they decided to take some money matters into their own hands. The grandsons decided to come over to our neighbors campsite and begin BEATING on everyone. They hit the women and the men at the site. They even brought over all of the buddies at the party so it was like 20 people against 5. Turned quickly turned into a brawl with my family and kids having the front row seat. Cops were called and at 3:30am cops beat on our camper door asking to speak with my husband to clarify what happened. I would like say that the drama for the weekend ended there but again on Sunday the cops were once again called back to the store for yet another incident. I would recommended that you if have a family for you to continue your trip on to Canaan if you would like to camp without all the drama. My family will NEVER conduct business with people of caliber.

Rooms were dirty, pool for an indoor was cold shower water smelled like river water or creek water had to lend other guests my bathroom cleaner and lysol television not good no cable or satellite, no ice machine, tee pees looked horrible from outside peeked threw window of one it is big cement block with kitchen flooring on it. Locks on doors to rooms not in good shape at all. Stayed only one nite until we could find something better in morning had made reservations in advance based off the internet pictures. NO little soaps, shampoos, lotion or conditioners. No coffee pot in room or phone. If you have any complaints about the room you have 20 minutes to notify office or you pay for the room and that note is not in all the rooms. First room we got was full mof wasps and stunk.Second room the glass was broke on the door. Slept on our own blankets we brought from home.Would suggest to anyone planning a family vacation do not stay here you will not be pleased if you want clean rooms and beds.

“Jekyl and Hyde Yokum's rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

We, too, were appalled by the rooms near the swimming pool. I don't know why anyone who cares for their safety would stay there.

So we switched to the Yokum's rooms above the general store, in the building next to the Breakfast Porch building, where all the highways meet. I had been there before with my girlfriend, so I knew they were acceptable.

My daughters, who were about to puke over the rooms a half-mile down the road, were so thrilled at the Yokum's above the general store, with the swing and view of Seneca Rocks, that they slept in the same bed! There were only 2 rooms left that had 3 beds in all, and there were 4 of us.

So, if you go, ONLY accept the Yokum's rooms above the general store. Do not, for fear of catching something that will require medical treatment the rest of your life, agree to stay in the Yokum's scummy and scary rooms a half-mile up Rt. 55 next to the indoor swimming pool! Ever!

Room Tip: Accept only the second-floor rooms above Yokum's general store.

“Blood Stained Sheets”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

This place was absolutely disgusting and clearly they do not change their sheets or towels in between guests. We spent most of our time outside by a campfire so when we went to finally go to bed and pull back the sheets we saw the clearly had stains from a previous couple having relations on the bed. The stains were in the same spot on the top sheet and soaked through to the bottom sheet so it was very clear what it was. The office was closed at this time so we had to attempt to sleep in folding chairs we had brought until the morning. We went to the office first thing in the morning for a refund and were told that it was hard water stains. Clearly this wasn't true so we brought the sheets down to the office to show the. When they realized what it was they told us that we had done that ourselves and the sheets were not like that when we got there. We left after the staff threatened to have their brothers come beat us up because they would not refund our money. I advise anyone who values their health to stay away from yokums
