We spent New Years eve at Stonewall Jackson Resort for the second year in a row. The resort is nice, as usual. They offered a New Years Eve deal again this year, for $257 per couple you get 1 night, dinner in Stillwaters with champagne, brunch the next day and a 2pm checkout.
As always, the staff was friendly, I find that typical in WV, even when I work down there. The resort was about the same as last year, my room may have been a tad not as nice, but it was clean. I thought it odd that there was no frig in the room, but no big deal.
The dinner is a $34/person charge built into the package, IMO, not worth it. Prime rib that was dangerously rare, shrimp on a stick that was nasty, and if you didn't look real close, you missed the seafood all together. Both sides of the buffet are identical EXCEPT, there was only seafood on one end. The oysters and mussles were marginal, I had to ask for our champagne and then they only gave me a 1/2 glass. I don't think our waiter was ever a waiter before, more like a parking lot attendant that was drug downstairs because of the crowd, polite never the less. The brunch was OK, probably better last year. I would describe the buffet as compared to other times I have had it as if they "cheaped out".
Now the festivities .... they had a band in the lounge, same band as last year, enjoyed them again, they play just about anything! Drinks are EXPENSIVE, $11 for 2 draft beers, I was afraid to order a mixed drink. The pool and hot tubs were open, the nice 50's day made it able to be used outdoors, a big fire burning in the outdoor ring where you can wonder out with your drink and hang out if you want. The pool and pool area was clean, a nice little break being able to use that. A late 2pm checkout was included, that was nice, made it a nicer slow pace.
Would I go back again for the 3rd year, probably but I would consider paying regular rate and ordering from the menu to skip the buffet. It was a comfortable sized crowd, not a standing room only mob scene. The crowd was easy going and everyone had fun.
I found it disturbing that a few people brought their dogs! There were a couple of people with those little yapping lap dogs walking up and down the hall. IMO, that is completely inappropriate for a resort such as this. I was prepared and ready to light up the phone at the desk if I heard those things barking as I did earlier, fortunately no issue. They just built a HUGE wooden bridge going from the Campground to the resort, probably 100 yards long, real nice even if you just want to take a walk. Let's see if the Campgound kids kill anyone this summer with their bikes.
Houseboats ..... I have rented them 4 times over the years. Be advised, they got rid of them all! I was told that they were getting old and they needed work, I would agree that they needed freshening, they were 1998 boats. Little more to that story, but never the less, no more boats! Too bad, that was a great way to vacation!
