“Road Noise Aplenty - They Kept Their Promise”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

I stayed at this property for one night in November 2011 while in the area on business. I was sold a king room at an $89 price point.

The property is located adjacent to I-81 in an area with strip malls, restaurants and other business related facilities. It has a well-kept exterior and is within walking distance to mutiple restaurants. The area appeared to be safe and was certainly well lit.

Lobby and desk areas were clean and attractive. Check-in was a one minute affair as I utilized the echeck-in option. The property was at capacity during my stay.

Elevator cabs were clean and service was prompt. Interior hallways were clean and well lit. Hallway ice/soda machine areas were clean, and these locations can easily be overlooked by staff.

The room was clean, fresh and stocked with typical Hampton amenities. All electrical equipment functioned as advertised.

As mentioned above, the hotel is directly next to I-81 - literally just a few yards. That is where the problem lies. This road is so heavily travelled by trucks that road noise proved to be a "sleep preventer". It was very noticeable. So much so that rest was simply hard to come by. I found myself counting sheep - and trucks.

I travel many days per year and stay in properties at multiple price points. This one, whether it was poorly constructed or whatever, is probably the noisiest I have encountered in years - and that includes stays in dense, urban areas.

Breakfast was typical for a Hampton property. Breakfast staff were most polite and very busy. All breakfast items were continually restocked.

Upon check-out I mentioned the road noise issue to the clerk and asked for consideration of a reduced rate. I certainly used their facilities water, toiletries, breakfast etc. They incurred cost in me being there and deserved renumeration for that. At the same time, I did not feel I should pay full price. The clerk did not hesitate to not just adjust the bill - she zeroed it out. She pointed to the Hampton guarantee on the counter and indicated that since I was not 100% satisfied that the stay was on them. That is superior service delivery! I thanked her profusely and departed. I did so with a good feeling for the Hampton brand. Simply put, they practiced what they preached.

I had a marginal stay that was saved by superior service. That aside, the property is not for me. I will be in Martinsburg multiple times over the next year and will try the South Martinsburg property near Inwood, WV. It is farther from the highway and better rest will likely follow.

Room Tip: Stay as far away from I-81 as possible. Road noise is simply too much at this property.

“Hotel was good...front desk clerk was not.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

I recently spent two night at the Hampton Inn Martinsburg, WV while attending a business conference.

The stay would have been perfect, if not for a front desk clerk with a poor attitude.

I had made my reservation over the phone with the hotel manager, but there was a mix up, and only the second night of my stay got booked, instead of both nights.

I arrived at 8:00pm after driving 6 hours in nasty conditions, only to be told I had no reservation, and they were booked solid. The clerk may no attempt to offer me any assistance in finding an alternative place to stay. I insisted on speaking to the hotel manager, who worked things out for me. Event he next day, after we figured out what happened, the clerk had a less than pleasant attitude and acted very put out by the bother of the incident.

Over-looking that one staff member, the hotel was very nice. It was conveniently located to many other businesses, as well as the venue where my conference was. The breakfast in the morning was surprisingly good, and of course the beds were VERY comfortable.

“Small but Adequate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2011

This Hampton Inn was a layover on a longer trip, so we did not avail ourselves of many of the perks. I missed the pool of the larger facilities, and our room was quite small compared to other Hamptons. However, the breakfasts were typical, the beds were comfortable, and our needs were met.

The front desk person, however, was very disagreeable, not just to me but to several of the patrons. One guest even commented that she had never been treated so badly! He really was not helpful

I have to comment on the huge number of fast food restaurants located nearby. If that is what you desire, you have plenty to pick from! The mall is also closeby. We decided, however, to drive into the adjoining town to see if there were any different restaurants. The main street had construction, so we almost got lost trying to navigate the area. I don't recommend going there on a dark night if you are a stranger!

I still recommend most Hampton Inns, but this one is slightly below standard.

Room Tip: Microwave and frig in some rooms.

Thank you for staying with us and we are sorry there was a problem. We will do everything in our power to see this doesn't happen again. We do offer a seasonal outdoor pool and we are glad you likes the location as there are indeed a large number of restaurants within walking distance. We hope that you'll give us another chance and stay with us again.

“Capped internet makes this good hotel bellow average for business travel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

The hotel is clean and nice. The staff is polite and efficient. The rooms are clean and housekeeping is performed in an efficient and caring way (a shirt I left in a sofa was folded by the housekeeper). Sadly, the internet connection is free but slllloooowwww.... capped at less than 0.5 megs, which makes this hotel unsuitable for business travel. I have stayed in other properties bith here in Martinsburg and Sheperdstown, and the reason why I this hampton iss was because I expected a better internet service. For me and my colleagues, this is a deal breaker.
The rooms are noisy and you will hear the tv from your neighbor even at a moderate volume. The air conditioning/ heater is very noisy, and they turn on an extractor during "shower peak times" -morning and night- that sounds like a power tool! That said, if you don't care about a subpar internet connectivity, the hotel is nice, and has good value for what you are paying.

I am sad to hear that the internet connection was not up to your liking during your stay. Our hotel contracts the highest bandwidth internet available in the Martinsburg area which, unfortunately, isn't as modernized as some urban areas. Fiberoptic networking is not available in the area as of yet but we hope it will be soon. As a policy, the hotel does not "cap" the bandwidth available to our guests. It is possible that during high occupancy and peak times the bandwidth can be held up by a guest or guests who are streaming a movie or playing online games. We are constantly striving to optimize the internet/web-browsing experience for our guests and hope that you will not experience this problem if you choose to stay with us again. We thank you for your business and hope that you will stay with us again.
