I stayed at the Pullman Plaza for business... not by choice. The hotel itself has its good points, but it just has a general bad feel about it that makes me feel not comfortable. As others have pointed out, it is very run-down and in need of repairs. Cracks in the lobby ceiling, stains everywhere, shabby carpet. The desk staff does the minimum to help you out. I wouldn't characterize them as unfriendly, more so just not very eager to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The hotel does offer free shuttle service, which is nice, but they wouldn't even take us to a restaurant that was less than 3 miles away, and gave us the number for a cab company. And the drivers were not very organized... the night before checkout, we notified them we had a 6:30am flight to catch and we were assured by the driver on duty that he would be in the lobby at 5:15am to take us to the airport. When 5:35am rolled around, we asked the staff member at the desk how much longer it would be. Thankfully, he flagged a maintenance worker (?!) to take us to the airport in the second shuttle van. We actually just barely checked in with less than 30 minutes before our flight and I almost wasn't allowed to take my scheduled flight due to TSA regulations (which I would not have broken if the shuttle driver was there on time)!! I am at least glad the guy at the desk and the maintenance worker went out of their way to help us out.
The complimentary breakfast is nothing special, but at least it's there. There are apples, scrambled eggs and yogurt every day; those are the only really healthy options. Everything else is bacon, sausage, muffins, biscuits, gravy, and sugary cereal. It wasn't too bad, but not much of a healthy variety. The "service" (if you can even call it that) is ridiculously bad... on more than one occasion myself and/or a colleague would ask for a glass water, and then never see the waitress again. But yet she still somehow managed to remind us that her tip wasn't included. That's too bad lady, but most people who get tips actually WORK for them. The maintenance guy that drove me to the airport at 6am got more money from me than she did.
As for other amenities, the pool was never open (although the weather was terrible all week, so that could be why). There is internet access in the lobby, but you can't print anything if you are checking in for a flight, printing a map, etc. The bar at Bobby Pruett's Steakhouse is decent, the staff there is leaps and bounds above the breakfast staff and we had a good time there. I guess the hotel is in a good location, close to Pullman Square, although being from a bigger city, I'm not sure if there was anything else that I could have even been close to in order to determine how good the location really is. The Marshall University campus is pretty close, and there are some good restaurants in the area.
As for the rooms, there is wireless internet, which they advertise in the lobby as not being something you can connect to (although I did actually manage to connect to it once) but otherwise you have to use an ethernet cord (defeats the point of a laptop...!). I found a pubic hair in the shower when I unpacked my toiletries in the bathroom (definitely not mine, as I hadn't showered yet!) so that is gross. They provide Bath & Bodyworks products though, which I loved. The lighting in the bathroom, as well as the general room area, is pretty bad and creates odd shadowing in bad places, making it difficult to apply makeup. The rooms were a decent size. The tv channel selection was fine for a hotel, although if I pulled the rotating platform out of the dresser, the wires came loose and picture became fuzzy. You can't use the 1-foot-wide balconies (there's nothing to see anyway though) because they are bolted shut, and as others have pointed out, the in-wall AC unit is scary loud (although it does drown out the background noise, so I didn't mind!). The room just had an overall dingy, dark feel that didn't sit well with me. The beds and pillows were also way too hard for my taste, although I still got an ok night's sleep every night.
The bottom line is that if it had been my own money to spend, I would have looked for something that is at least a step up from the Pullman Plaza. Looking around the area, I'm guessing there must be even worse places to stay, I shudder to think what they might be like.
