“OK place if you want to stay inside most of the time...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

...but I came here to get away from people, enjoy Nature, and do some hiking. There are NO hiking trails close by. Nearest trails are in Capacon State Park, which is 24 miles away, and those trails are relatively short. No historical museums open in November. No decent places to eat. The golf course club house grill is a (junk food) golf shack. This place is a giant housing development. Its only redeeming feature, if you don't play golf, is the tennis courts. I won't be coming back.

“While other golf resorts are closing this one is thriving”

Times are tough for most golf resorts. But The Woods has two beautiful golf courses (each unique in its own way), a beautiful and relaxing spa and salon, 3 large pools (1 indoor and two outdoor), several tennis courts (indoor and outdoor), an adequate exercise facility and beautiful views of the mountains. The best way to stay is in a 4 bedroom Meadow house or a cabin. Come prepared for casual food. There is no real restaurant. But the Grille and the bar are fun and have weekend entertainment.

“The most inconvenient “resort” on earth”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2011

I planned to spend a long Memorial Day weekend here to relax. A friend and I drove 2 hours from DC metro for one of our many “resort” getaways. We chose this locale because of its convenient location relative to DC and opted for the BFF getaway package. It was an unfortunate mistake.

1) NO RESORT - First of all, the name is misleading. This is not a resort. A typical resort is designed to be self contained property with amenities conveniently located for easy access. This place is like a rustic mountain vacation property. Actually, I don’t know what this is but a resort it is not.

2) SIGNAGE -The first thing we noticed was the lack of proper signage to direct guests to a check-in location.
• We had to call the property’s telephone # to have someone direct us to check-in.
• It turns out, you check-in in the recreation building.

3) ROOMS -The “hotel” rooms are actually more like adjoined cabins that look like summer camp bunkers on the outside (they are army green).
• Once inside, it is set up a like a hotel style room but the rooms smelled like…. well an old bunker. Luckily, I keep febreze in my car so I grabbed that and sprayed the room and opened the doors.
• We ended up getting a candle from Wal-Mart because the febreze could not handle the job of eliminating the smell (which likely means the carpet, drapery and bed covers have not been changed in 40 years)
• The bathroom had a Jacuzzi tub that had not been cleaned (it actually had a ring around the entire tub).

4) RESTAURANT- No restaurant on the property. Yes, you read that correctly. If you read the website, it states there is a Club House Grille.
• So actually this is the snack bar on the golf course. You know…. Hot dogs, hamburgers & fries and the typical junk food you grab after a round of golf.
• Even worse, you have to leave your bunker, get in your car and drive two miles up the road to get to this grill.
• Every time (and I do mean every time) we ordered food at the grill, they were out of basics and generally botched orders.
• You would think that with the lack of a proper restaurant, that the rooms have kitchenettes. But no, only a mini fridge. We drove two hours out of the city to a remote “resort” that has no full service restaurant.
• Anytime we wanted non-junk food, we had to drive 30 minutes to Martinsburg WV. You could refrigerate leftovers in your mini fridge but no way to warm it so we ate all leftovers COLD.
• Turns out the formal restaurant closed in March due to lack of customers. My suspicion is that it was probably just as poorly managed as the rest of the property and they could not get customers to come back.

5) POOL - No services at the pool. So, there are 3 pools on the property. One pool is in walking distance from the bunkers. Has life guards and chairs but nothing more than that. No umbrellas, no towels…. It did have one soda machine but it was out of order. So if you want to relax at the pool you need a cooler filled with snacks & drinks, beach towel and your own umbrella (but who would think to bring these items to a “resort”). The second pool is located in the recreation center. Did not bother to try it. The third pool is located near the golf course two miles up the road.

6) TRAILS – The trails were not well marked and the staff have no maps for you to locate them. Good luck.

7) SPA - I had a great massage by one of the therapists. My mani / pedi was little more than a paint change and minor filing with a nail buff.

Bottom line, this is a vacation home and cottage community that approaches their short term patrons like an after thought (or no thought at all). This place is not managed well at all. It’s like a ghost town with one of the main buildings in an abandoned state. It has lots of recreational facilities but who on earth would drive to the middle of no where with its lack of general facilities just to play tennis on their courts? I was not able to relax much on my long week as I was constantly reminded of the inconvenience and ineptness of this place. I would not recommend this place.

“Nice Property and Golf Course, but beware!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2011

My wife and I took a small weekend excursion during Memorial Day Weekend. We made our reservation through the internet. That was okay. Checking in was okay, but the clerk was a little slow, and didn't provide much information. The rooms looked updated, but had a slight musky smell. We had to open the sliding glass balcony door, the frame of the screen had almost fallen out. We also had to turn on the ceiling fan to air the room out. While we were there, there wasn't any working Ice Machine on the grounds. I called the front desk, and they told me one was on order, and to go a mile to the clubhouse to get ice. I feel if I requested ice, they should have sent someone to get it for me or the front desk should have an ice chest upon request . We used the pool during staying our stay, it was well maintained, but the pool does not provide any towels. So if you do come here, bring your own towels or take the ones in room. I mention this at checkout, and no apologies was made. She said we never had towels at the pool. If that so, then they should mentioned this on their website, confirmation letter, or in the hotel room. The property only had one restaurant open during our stay. That was the Clubhouse Grill. The menu at the grill is very limited, and they RAN OUT OF FOOD on Memorial day. The grill is nice for golfers, but the property needs a second restaurant. I told the clerk at checkout a second restaurant was needed, but she said they had to close the other restaurant due to the economy. So, if you go here be prepared to eat on limited menu (burgers). The town of Hedgeville to is basically a fast food town for eating. The only place I can recommend is the Texas Barbecue place on the west side of town. The BBQ ribs were great, but there isn't any place really to sit and eat. We brought our food back, and ate at a picnic table on the grounds of the Woods. The golf course was nice and well maintained. But if you come here to play golf, find someplace to stay. This resort is not worth the price

“The Woods is getting run down, still OK but staff was disinterested”

Needed a getaway weekend with the mrs. Looked around for a place with swm, tennis, hiking, etc. The Woods seemed perfect but the rooms seemed in a state of disrepair, the staff was as friendly as ice cubes. Several times we said hello or good morning with little or no reply. Stil, the pool, spa , tennis and grounds were nice so we hung around. The real bad part was the restuarant which, I kid you not, served both our meals stone cold. The waitress seemeed lik she had heard this all before. It was clear that you had served us frozen food from a microwave. NOt bad for 20 bucks each.
Meanwhile, the pools are nice, the hot tub, weel kept, the tennis courts, perfect and the woodsy style nice for the weekend. Just don't approach the staff or go to the restaurant.
