“Five stays and COUNTING”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2010

We love River House! We started comming in December of 2008. We used to stay at the Country Inn every year for our anniversary but the place got so weird and expensive from management turnovers we just had to find something new.

Find it we did. The sweetest little Sears craftsmen bungalow ever! I don't need to repeat everything that "bearfish" said in his review so I'll just add to it.

River House is neat as a pin, cozy, and is filled with the most beautiful light even on a cloudy day. What used to be an annual getaway has now become a 4 season ritual. We are hooked. Every time we come we are compelled to greet the house with "Hi, River House," and when we leave we have to say "Bye, River House. We'll be back" because the place has such a warmth about it (even in 24 inches of snow!) I feel like I'm being hugged.

It's a wonderful step back in time. Think "Peggy Sue Got Married" when she gets to go back and visit her Grandparents. There are gardens with flowers and some fruit and vegtables, a tree swing for two, a fire pit, a gazebo, and of course the beautiful clean river with 2 decks over looking it. Don't miss the oppertunity to tube the Cacapon from the house. Two hours of bliss. Just put in right there because the horseshoe bend will bring you right back to River House with a really nice 15 min. walk!

I don't know what those other people are talking about. These owners are delightful and will bend over backwards to make your stay a joy.

“Whole New World, Whole New Management”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2010

First of all I have been going to River House for five years. Went there when it was a B&B, which it is NOT now. Now it is a Week/Weekend Rental house. I loved the owners of the B&B but this is a whole new world. Under current management the house is clean and airy and open. They really opened up the house by scrubbing it down and painting. The house is very simple... not luxurious in a good way, and very comfortable.

The River at this location is the most Private in Great Cacapon. The house is not right on the River but on a hill above it. There are now Two Decks to enjoy the River from and a large back porch and a screened in Front Porch. There is a screened in Gazebo off the back porch that is private and charming. It has a picnic table where you can dine or play cards. We did both. IT used to be the bedroom of the previous owners and I never got a chance to go out there. We easily carried our Dinner from the kitchen out to the gazebo.

River House is a quick under two hour drive from DC where I come up from. There really is nothing to do in Great Cacapon but Berkeley Springs is a 7 minute drive over the mountain and there are restaurants and shops. Cacapon State park is South on 522 about 10 miles out of town and plenty to do there outside... Golf, Hike, Swim, Wobble Range (skeet type shooting). North of Berkeley Springs is Hancock where they have GREAT bike trails on both the C&O canal and a 40 mile paved bike trail on the Maryland Rails To Trails. A bike shop right in Hancock will rent you bikes and or fix you up with snacks or anything Bike related.

The River House is a lovely get away and retreat for good friends or a family. We went with another couple so there is plenty of room here. I highly recommend it!

“perfect country getaway”

The new owners have poured their hearts and soul into this cozy, cute country getaway.
Four friends and I stayed for a weekend and found it to be a perfect nest for our needs. My visitors from California marveled at the landscape and the clear river. While modest in furnishing, there was clearly thought put into each room and we were pleased to find several hidden treasures that reflected the owners committment to supporting local artists and vendors. Given the season and rainy weather we were unable to make use of the river or the firering but would love to return in the summer or fall to take advantage of the very private setting. Best memory is sitting around the dining room table talking til late in the evening. Owner was there upon arrival and more than helpful in showing the grounds and directing us to local areas of interest. Plan to return again. If you are looking for the Hilton, this is not it....if you are looking for a place for relaxation, fun and connection, it is a great home away from home.

“Dirty House!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2008

I booked a weekend stay at the River House for our wedding anniversary. They advertised 3 different rooms at 3 different prices. The most expensive room being the largest. I sent a check in advance to reserve the room - as they would not take a credit card to hold the room. Upon arrival the owners were suprisingly not home but left us a note telling us which room to goto. It was not the room I had reserved. I was appalled that beds were unmade, laundry was laying around the bathroom was gross and it was just a dark, dingy and dirty house. The audacity of these people to advertise that they are a B&B!!!! It was like staying in a frat house!
I was so upset by the room switch and at the condition of the "B&B" (more like "D&D" for dingy & dirty) that we left the house in search of other accommodations. I called the owner and told him how we felt. He was NOT apologetic at all and would not refund any of my money even though we paid for a room he never intended to give us. I was disgusted.
So we scrambled to find a place to stay for the night -with a limited budget now- we ended up staying Cacapon State Park and had a lovely time. Stay clear of this rat's nest & save yourself the agony!

This B & B, tucked away in a town close to Berkeley Springs, feeds on the naivity of its visitors and the smallness of the town. With limited options in this area, most internet searchers come across thier website with relative ease at some point in time in their search. The website boasts a pleasing and friendly environment and posts several happy pictures of the rooms. All of this appears fine until you get there. The home is unkept and very dirty. The rooms are little more than beds thrown into rooms. With no soap available for patrons, a dirty bathroom and curtains and blinds that were broken, this place left us actually preferring to stay just about anywhere else. Avoid this place if you can help it. We left this place and went to stay at the Berkeley Spring Inn and Day Spa. Now, that place was nice...
