“Kid Friendly Central”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 April 2011

If you're looking for a place that you're child will fall in love with right along with you, look no further! My four-year-old still talks about the day the owner of this lovely house taught her how to pick a blueberry. She loves this house. There are instruments to play with, a yard swing to play on, lots of yard to run in, animals to find and a river to splash in. My daughter still carries a picture of the Riverhouse in her pocket and tells everyone she meets that she has to see her friend Cat this summer because she promise to show her birds. LOL. The rooms are clean and the downstairs bathroom is the perfect height for little kids! There is a firepit and a gazebo to pretend to be a princess in. If you have kids this is where imagination is born.

“Hands down the best place I have stayed in 25 years.”

River House WV is by far the best place I have stayed in the last 25 years. I was looking for a get-away in the mountains with a short drive from where I live in Lancaster, PA. The two and a half hour drive was scenic and when I arrived at River House, I was greeted like I was a long lost friend of the family. The rooms are cozy, sunny and spacious and can accommodate singles, couples, families and can easily handle 8 people without being crowded. The gazebo out back served as my "breakfast room" where I enjoyed seeing deer in the yard and hearing birds of all kinds. There is a short walk down to the river where great fishing can be had and in the warmer months (also came here in July with friends) tubing down the river is an activity worth trying out. There is an ouside firepit for "singing round the campfire" and making smores. The flora surrounding River House provides fresh fruits during the different seasons. I took pears from several trees on the grounds and made an amazing pear salsa. Berkley Springs is an artsy town with plenty to see and do. Activities range from visiting local artisan shops to a used book store where I found several books I just had to have. Then since it was the first Saturday of the month, I had a card reading done by a local astrologer. There are organic restaurants to enjoy as well as other more traditional ones. One thing you will not find are fast food joints (thank heavens). I also relaxed by having a massage in town by one of the local massage therapists. All I can say about that is Ahhhhhhhh! Just what I needed. The restaurant I enjoyed the most (although it was hard to choose just one) is Panorama at the Peak. The food and service were impecable and the view overlooking the valley is amazing.
As a Social Worker who needs to relax and unwind several times a year, this is the place I go to achieve that goal. An added plus for those who don't like to kennel or leave their dogs behind is you can bring your dog along. This magical place is for anyone, no matter their age. There is always something to do (if you want to) and there are many ways to relax too. The owners are amazing people who will bend over backward to make your stay a fantastic time. I am happy to say that I consider them friends and family.

“Five stays and COUNTING”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2010

We love River House! We started comming in December of 2008. We used to stay at the Country Inn every year for our anniversary but the place got so weird and expensive from management turnovers we just had to find something new.

Find it we did. The sweetest little Sears craftsmen bungalow ever! I don't need to repeat everything that "bearfish" said in his review so I'll just add to it.

River House is neat as a pin, cozy, and is filled with the most beautiful light even on a cloudy day. What used to be an annual getaway has now become a 4 season ritual. We are hooked. Every time we come we are compelled to greet the house with "Hi, River House," and when we leave we have to say "Bye, River House. We'll be back" because the place has such a warmth about it (even in 24 inches of snow!) I feel like I'm being hugged.

It's a wonderful step back in time. Think "Peggy Sue Got Married" when she gets to go back and visit her Grandparents. There are gardens with flowers and some fruit and vegtables, a tree swing for two, a fire pit, a gazebo, and of course the beautiful clean river with 2 decks over looking it. Don't miss the oppertunity to tube the Cacapon from the house. Two hours of bliss. Just put in right there because the horseshoe bend will bring you right back to River House with a really nice 15 min. walk!

I don't know what those other people are talking about. These owners are delightful and will bend over backwards to make your stay a joy.

“Whole New World, Whole New Management”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2010

First of all I have been going to River House for five years. Went there when it was a B&B, which it is NOT now. Now it is a Week/Weekend Rental house. I loved the owners of the B&B but this is a whole new world. Under current management the house is clean and airy and open. They really opened up the house by scrubbing it down and painting. The house is very simple... not luxurious in a good way, and very comfortable.

The River at this location is the most Private in Great Cacapon. The house is not right on the River but on a hill above it. There are now Two Decks to enjoy the River from and a large back porch and a screened in Front Porch. There is a screened in Gazebo off the back porch that is private and charming. It has a picnic table where you can dine or play cards. We did both. IT used to be the bedroom of the previous owners and I never got a chance to go out there. We easily carried our Dinner from the kitchen out to the gazebo.

River House is a quick under two hour drive from DC where I come up from. There really is nothing to do in Great Cacapon but Berkeley Springs is a 7 minute drive over the mountain and there are restaurants and shops. Cacapon State park is South on 522 about 10 miles out of town and plenty to do there outside... Golf, Hike, Swim, Wobble Range (skeet type shooting). North of Berkeley Springs is Hancock where they have GREAT bike trails on both the C&O canal and a 40 mile paved bike trail on the Maryland Rails To Trails. A bike shop right in Hancock will rent you bikes and or fix you up with snacks or anything Bike related.

The River House is a lovely get away and retreat for good friends or a family. We went with another couple so there is plenty of room here. I highly recommend it!

“perfect country getaway”

The new owners have poured their hearts and soul into this cozy, cute country getaway.
Four friends and I stayed for a weekend and found it to be a perfect nest for our needs. My visitors from California marveled at the landscape and the clear river. While modest in furnishing, there was clearly thought put into each room and we were pleased to find several hidden treasures that reflected the owners committment to supporting local artists and vendors. Given the season and rainy weather we were unable to make use of the river or the firering but would love to return in the summer or fall to take advantage of the very private setting. Best memory is sitting around the dining room table talking til late in the evening. Owner was there upon arrival and more than helpful in showing the grounds and directing us to local areas of interest. Plan to return again. If you are looking for the Hilton, this is not it....if you are looking for a place for relaxation, fun and connection, it is a great home away from home.
