Based on several other reviews around the Charleston area, I went ahead and shelled out the extra $20/night for a motel without hot & cold running roaches.
Check-in:
When I pulled into the parking lot, I had to circle the building to find an open space, and was a bit concerned about the neighborhood. A couple of the first floor (smoking) rooms were missing their wall AC units, and I could see through the vent hole into the room!! Fortunately the 3rd floor room I received was clean, although the place had definitely seen better days.
The single king bed was on top of 2 double-sized box springs, one of which was severely sagging. On the plus side, the linens and blanket were clean after I tossed the bedspread on the lazy-boy.
The tub didn't have any of the stains other reviewers noticed at this motel, but it had gotten a re-bath at some point, and squeaked wherever I stepped. There was plenty of hot water, which is a necessity for me.
I didn't remember seeing it advertised on the motel's website, but the room also had a micro-fridge that seemed to be in good condition.
Morning:
Breakfast was a bare-minimum continental served in the lobby, and there weren't any tables in the "breakfast area" which meant balancing a bowl of cereal and coffee up 3 flights of stairs (no elevator).
Both the night and morning attendants were friendly and pleasant, despite having to field phone calls and a couple other guests at the same time.
I had called ahead to make sure they had an iron & board, and was pleasantly surprised that the board was a full size fold-up instead of the usual tabletop dorm-sized board.
Final Impressions:
If you need a cheap, clean room with quick access to downtown Charleston, this is probably one of the best motels available. As far as value is concerned, I probably could have gotten a better deal 10-20 miles down the road.
