“Scenic, and price made it right”

This place has rustic character. There's a lot that makes it obviously an early 70's establishment. So its no 5-star getaway. However, it is welcoming and clean. The service is friendly. The buffet is great. The views are good. You aren't right at the slopes so you have to take the short bus ride. I usually might feel cramped by something like this, but it was fine. You have to walk outside to get from the restaurant/pool to the room. Not too fun when its 10 degrees out, but part of the ski weekend experience. "Cold breakfast" buffet including pastries and oatmeal is $6.95 including a literally bottomless cup of coffee. Good view from that place too. Price is a factor probably. We got a great overnight rate that included day ski passes.

“Diamond in the rough”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

We had a very nice ski weekend recently at Canaan. We had gotten a Groupon deal and due to other comments, our expectations were low. Thankfully we were very pleased with
the overall experience. The staff was wonderful and pleasant. The lodge was cozy and inviting. The bus driver to the slopes was terrific and informative.(There was actually snow!)Restaurant staff couldn't do enough for us, even though it was all buffet and tipping is probably minimal. The rooms were minimalist and dated furnishings, but there are two new additions that will be connected to the main lodge and the old "motels" will be torn down. Beautiful new rooms are soon on the horizon and the views from them will be lovely.Expectation to completion is 2014. There are upgrades for the ski slopes and the tubing areas as well in the near future. Tubing was a BLAST! Slopes were in great shape considering the warm winter we have had this year.
Nice cozy bar, friendly bartender and great prices on drinks!
Deep Creek Lake area only about an hour up the road for more things to do.
We would go again.

Room Tip: Wait until 2014 when the new rooms are available.

“Every WV Stereotype, All In One Place”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

My boyfriend and I, who happen to be an interracial couple, stayed here in mid-November after purchasing a Travelzoo voucher. We were assigned a handicapped room (my BF has mild cerebral palsy but we had not informed the hotel of this beforehand or requested special accommodations) with visibly unclean bedding, and were told that a handyman would "take a look at" the three non-functioning light fixtures (he never showed despite repeated calls to the front desk). In the hotel restaurant, we were openly stared at by both the staff and the other guests and the difference between our service and the service at surrounding tables was so obvious it bordered on tragic for all four of the meals we ate on premises (which were overpriced and unhealthy to start with). The only pleasant part of our trip was escaping for a day of hiking at Blackwater Falls just down the road.

We spoke to the head chef on the last morning of our stay (who was very polite, if not as apologetic as we hoped), and sent an email to the general manager of the hotel the day after we left regarding our extreme dissatisfaction with our treatment and accommodations. The GM did not respond to our letter until mid-January 2012 (over two months later), at which time he did not apologize, but instead invited us to re-book for another stay! It is safe to say that neither of us will be returning to this "resort", and we strongly advise others to look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the back side, facing away from the road and front parking lots.

Thanks again for bringing your concerns to our attention. I apologize that my second response to you took so long. Since I had not encountered similar concerns before from other guests I wanted to make sure to do a very detailed investigation. The invitation is still open and we encourage you to come back and give us another shot.

“Bring on renovation”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Not a resort! If you can delay your stay until nx year....Wait! They are renovating! The rooms are gross, falling apart and the furniture is pressed wood from 1950's. The pizza at the snak bar is like cardboard....go to Siriannis in town for pizza! The breakfast buffet was very nice but over priced! Amy at the front desk was the most positive part of our stay.....she was very kinda and helpful! Even the ski resorts in the area need some new life....service was poor at local pub. I was shocked that they we're running the grommers at Canaan in the middle of the day in slopes that were open and while skiers were around.....very unsafe! We will not return to ski at Canaan!

“Canaan Valley Ski Trip”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

The resort is about what you would expect for a state run facility. They are in the process of remodeling the Main Lodge and building 2 new buildings adjacent to the Lodge for accomodations. The ski area is located about 2-3 miles away and have to be transported by bus from resort.
