I've read mix reviews about the Country Inn, but I thought I'd give it a try for myself --- I was totally disappointed; thank God I booked the Roman bath at the park and some spa treatments to at least make my wknd better. So here it is....
Location - Excellent (but all others not so good)
Front desk - I had to wait for a few minutes before someone even came out to see if there was anyone waiting to check in. Not a big deal, so I just let it go. An hour after I check in, my friends and I stopped by the front desk to see if they could make a reservation at another restaurant in town. The front desk person said, "Oh no, I can only make a reservation for our own restaurant" (with an attitude). So I asked if she can at least, give me the tel. no. of the local restaurant and I'll call them myself. Again, she had an attitude while looking up the tel. no. When she found it, she said in a rude manner, "The last four digits are .......". I then told her politely, I'm sorry, but I would need the first seven digits first. So she looked it up and verbally gave it to me (like I should remember it). As a front desk person, I would think she should know that majority of folks visiting are from out of town, and how am I suppose to know phone nos. around town if I'm a guest. Something so simple ruined my mood, all because the front desk lady was having a bad day. Oh, I found out the next day that her name is Barbara.
Sleeping Room - We stayed at the Spa West (3rd flr), which is the building behind the main Inn. This is the same bldg. where the spa is located (4th flr). My first impression when I walked in was that the room was dated and had a musty smell. Okay, I guess they have not updated it so I ignored it. Once I was settled, I looked around more and noticed the following:
1. Most of the seams from the wall paper, including the corners were peeling off the wall and the corners had tears (I don't mean small ones).
2. The room was supposedly cleaned, but there was a scum ring around the waters edge of the toilet bowl and brown water spots on the floor
3. The corner of the bathroom flooring/tiles had large cracks that needed major caulking (this I can ignore, but not the toilet bowl)
4. The first night we were in the room they gave us one soap, 1 shampoo and 1 lotion. I purposely left my stuff at home since I figured this inn would at least have the min. bath stuff that is needed. The 2nd day, we came back to the room and the amenities was not even replenished. So I had to walk to to front desk to ask for soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc.
5. The bath towels were so old that the edges were coming off; our floor towel had a big rip, with a small chunk taken off the middle edge. It almost looked like an old rag used to clean the floor -- I was really surprised with that one.
6. Small tube TV (I can't complain much w/ this, at least I was able to watch something)
7. Laying on the bed, I looked up at the ceiling and saw a large crack (it was definitely bigger than a hairline crack), approx. 4-5 feet long and a couple of places.
8. Noise -- definitely expect to hear the TV from the next door and folks outside the room walking/talking. This didn't bother me so much, since I'm not a light sleeper.
The Five Senses Spa - I booked a European Facial and Cranial. When I arrived, there were 5 people waiting around, so I said to myself "this must be good and folks like the spa. It turns out the person in charge of check-in wasn't sure who was doing what. It all worked out and I finally got to the facial waiting room. I was very happy w/ Stacy, she did my Facial. After my facial, I was told to go back down for the Cranial, and so I did. I waited with someone else there, but the staff wasn't sure which one of them is doing what treatment. Overall, my spa service was good, but the staff seemed unprepared or unsure of the guest who were arriving and who was doing what.
Restaurant at the Inn --- Very small menu for dinner. I only had breakfast at the restaurant. The first breakfast was on Sat. morning, and I ordered the eggs benedict; it was good. I don't know what happened Sunday morning....it all went downhill from there. We were seated by the hostess and said the Billy would be w/ us shortly.
We waited for quite a while, not even offered coffee by the hostess and 2 other wait staff that have been walking around. Finally I said to one of the wait staff as he was passing by our table, "Excuse me, are you Billy?" He said, "yes". so I told him that I was told he was working our table, and I asked if we can all get coffee. He didn't even know that he was handling our table, even thought the hostess told us. I asked for milk since I could not take the cream for my coffee. I asked two of the wait staff and still no milk --- took a while; finally the I asked the hostess who walking by if I can have milk as I've been waiting for a while (by now, my coffee was cold). so she grabbed the milk that was used by the other table who just left. I don't think that was very sanitary, without having to go over details. We finally ordered, I got the same eggs benedict. I was so happy as that came quickly, but only ate my runny eggs. The home fries was totally cold. Totally ruined my morning, but I said to myself and my friends, that we should not stress over this --- it was just disappointing! We didn't really stay, left money on the table and just stood up. We walked across the street to get some coffee.
The ice machine at the Spa West bldg. was not working, so I went to the front desk to see where I can get ice. I was shocked when I was told to go to the kitchen and ask for ice. I thought, she would have at least, ask one of the staff to go in the kitchen and get it for me. Sunday came and the ice machine was still not fixed.
Our last day night at the Inn, the toilet bowl flusher didn't work, so I open the lid of the bowl and saw that the chain came off or was cut. I called the front desk and 20 minutes after, they sent a housekeeping lady to take a look at it, she couldn't fix it and said that someone in maintenance will have to put a hook to fix it. My friends and I didn't really feel like sticking our hand inside the water tank to open up flap for flushing, each time we use the toilet. Anyway, I called the front desk again and he said that maintenance will not be in until Monday, and basically do what I've been doing --- sticking my hand inside the water tank of the bowl to flush the toilet.
Now, this explains why the ice machine was not fixed, too --- I guess they don't have a person onsite over the wknd, like a maintenance or facility person. I'm really surprised, since the wknd, is usually when folks are in town.
I travel a lot and have stayed in several hotels, Inns & B&B's; this is by far, the worst place I've stayed at. If their staff has better customer service and management would invest in basic upkeep, the Country Inn will probably profit more in the long run. It's a real shame since they are located in the heard of Berkeley Springs, within walking distance to shops, restaurants, spas.
