“Please be aware of what you are booking!”

Our not so lovely stay consisted of two twin beds and a communal bathroom! This place is horrible! Where should I start?? We stayed at this hotel for one night since we were in town for a wedding. Disappointed and disgusted are a few words that come to mind when describing the Hotel de Haro. First, when we checked in the lovely woman at the front desk informed us that we had booked a room with two twin beds (probably not the most accomodating for a married couple seeking a romantic get-away while in town for a wedding). When we entered our room we saw that there was no bathroom and the room was in need of some major updating. If we had to stay here more than one night. then I would have cancelled the reservation and taken the late cancellation fee gladly. We just feel as though the woman at the front desk- Debi, should have specified the ammenities or lack there of when we booked our accomodations back in April for this October wedding!

“"Historic" building is horrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2010

My friends were getting married at the Roche Harbor resort and I made a last minute reservation at the Hotel De Haro. The only rooms they had available was an "European style" room in a historic building. By "European style " they meant a shared bathroom. I am not a type a person who would share a bathroom with a boyfriend in my own house, less with some stangers, but since I was only staying there for one night, I figured I'll manage. There are about 8 rooms on each floor and two bathrooms - mens and womens. The womens bathroom on the second floor didn't have a shower, just an old-fashioned bath tub. The womens bathroom on the third floor had a shower and toilet stalls, so while you're taking a shower someone else could be going to the bathroom at the same time...
But my biggest disappointment was the room itself - it's tiny; ugly - old flower wallpaper, just as old, shabby furniture; windows that are impossible to open or close. Of course there is no such a thing as an AC or room safe. The bed and pillows are uncomfortable. The walls are paper-thin, I could hear a whole conversation next door. But worst of all is SMELL. The kind of smell you get when visiting 200 year old New England museums - that explains why it was called the "Historic" building. It smelled so bad, that it actually kept me awake after partying till 1 am; it smelled so bad, that i had to wash all my clothes after only being there for a day. I did not get any sleep (uncomfortable bed, smell, noise), and probably would had a more restfull night sleeping in my car.

This is really a shame that they keep this building and charging quite a lot for this room, as the resort itself is beautiful and a new building is nice.

“Ooooozes charm”

The lobby has the registry from 1907 with the signature of "Theo Roosevelt", we stayed in his room (Presidential Suite) and it was absolutely charming, wonderful, unique. Roche Harbor is a really neat place to stay too. Nearly everything seems turn-of-the-century, except for the bed which was very comfortable. If you want sterile, posh, manufactured, you probably shouldn't stay here, or really anywhere in the San Juans. This was really fun and memorable. Highly recommended. I would go back for sure.

“Historic Hotel still has charm”

I must admit we were nervous once we booked this hotel and then read reviews on several websites and travel books. However, we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. The location is wonderful, overlooking the harbor with wonderful gardens right in front of the hotel. The staff was very courteous, friendly and helpful. We had rooms that were classified as suites, meaning they were large with their own baths. While the building is over 100 years old and the rooms have been furnished to maintain the historic feel of the hotel, it was comfortable and clean and on par with other older historic properties we have stayed at in other areas of the country.
The entire complex at Roche Harbor has much to offer and is very well staffed to accommodate guests.

  • Liked — We could sit on the balcony and watch the Roche Harbor activities
  • Disliked — No air conditioning, however, it probably isn't needed 90% of the time

“A trip back in time (in a good way)”

Really a terrific place. The rooms are authentic and immaculate, the floor is appropriately uneven, and the shared bathroom is nicer than anything I've ever lived in. Roche Harbor is a much nicer place to stay than Friday Harbor, and this is the best spot from which to go whale watching. I wish we'd taken a boat from here rather than Victoria, this is the closest departure point to see them. There's a lot of construction around the hotel, so it might lose some of its isolated charm, but plenty of hiking trails and a great sculpture garden. Even an airport within walking distance. Very high class of people here too, probably because they're stinking rich (judging by the yachts). Check out Teddy Roosevelt's signature in the guest book.
