“Historic, old and charming.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

This little hotel away from the maddening crowd is not for everyone. We love the privacy of the Garden Room that used to be the Carriage House in 1889 now a charming clean cozy room. No smells of horse or carriages. Love the red tub and lovely painting. Everywhere one looks it oozes charm and old world. Friendly helpful people especially Richard.

Room Tip: All rooms have their own charm for families I recommend the Carriage House Rooms.

“Overpriced, rude, and shabby”

I guess the "for sale" sign should have been a dead give away as to the quality of this inn.

We made our reservations at the Anne Starrett for a romantic getaway. When we called to make a reservation, we asked for one of the nicest rooms. We booked the most expensive room that was to have a fireplace and large soaking tub.

When we arrived, we were dismayed to find that the room we had reserved was not in the mansion itself (which is a beautiful building), but across the street in a beach house looking structure (but without the beach). The room seemed clean, but the theme was tacky and overdone. The mattress was lumpy and the furniture, worn.

The fireplace did not work. Since there are no phones, we had to go back across the street to talk with the night inn keeper about the fireplace. He argued with us about the right way to turn on the fireplace! We went back to the room and tried to turn it on the "right way". After, serveral attempts, we went back to the innkeeper. After making several beseeching requests, the innkeeper came over to our room to help. He was also unable to turn on the fireplace. The came the bath. The enormous bath only filled up a couple inches before the water turned from hot, to lukewarm, to cold. This is despite the fact that we had a large, very noisy water heater in our room.

There were also long periods of time when there was no staff available in between when the night innkeeper left and the day innkeeper/owner arrived. And no one was there to help us checkout. We ended up paying a ridiculous amount of money to this place. We had booked two nights. DON'T STAY HERE

“Gorgeously restored in every detail ...loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

This beautiful Victorian mansion exceeded our expectations. There is nothing seedy or dowdy about it, and the place is immaculate. It is like stepping back into another era. Everything has beeen lovingly preserved, and the architecture is most interesting. Views of the water and walking distance to town. It is true that it isn't the "wine and cheese" kind of service, but if you want a lovely place to stay, this is it. Well worth a stay.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are lovely and unique. Rooms on the second floor are classic. The two bedroom dor...

“Not the beauty it used to be”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2010

We stayed 1 night and I would have to agree with most reviews that say this place is not in good repair, decor or the typical B&B or Inn experience. You are made to feel unwelcome and not to bother the inn keeper who is very synical. We were given no tour of the house, no coffee or teas and not felt welcome to hang around in the house. The linens smelled like old dirty mildew or a 2nd hand store odar. I have stayed in over 50 B&B's and love old homes. I thouht this house had such great potential. The staircase is beautiful and I am sure it was a great B&B years ago but there isn't even decent coffee in the room now. It is for sale and I think the town is failing as well. I couldn't get a straigt answer from anyone where a good place to eat was. We ended up feeling like we were taking our chances wherever we went. The town and hotel was creepy, and I love victorians, so this is an odd statement for me to make. In fact my dream is to own one, so there is something wrong in my opinion with this place. I would not return or refer anyone to stay here. We left at 7am as soon as morning hit. I too hope someone buys this home that will restore it back to its former beautiful state.
