I have stayed at The Palace twice during Port Townsend's jazz festivals: once in a small, basic room (6B, Miss Laney) and the second in the adjacent, much larger room with a kitchenette (6A, Miss Abigail). While I enjoyed both of these second floor rooms, Miss Abigail was certainly more comfortable. The building is an old Victorian era heritage structure that was once used as the local cathouse (hence the room names) and is furnished in appropriate period pieces. Ceilings are high, giving a spacious feel to the rooms but also resulting in long, steep staircases to the 2nd and 3rd floors. As well, on hot summer days, the 2nd floor cools off faster then the 3rd. The rooms were clean, the staff friendly and helpful. Rates are not cheap during jazz festival but are comparable to other similar properties in town. If you prefer sleek and modern, this place (and, indeed, much of Port Townsend) is not for you. But if you like character, and the convenience of the best location in town, The Palace is a great choice.
Room Tip: Staircases are long and steep. If you have heavy bags to carry or don't want an aerobic workout...
