After a long, stressful summer, I decided to stay at the Phoenix Inn as a treat for myself. It's next to Percival Landing and the Farmers' Market, two of the best places to visit in Olympia. I had asked for a room with a view of the Landing, and I got one---only the window was covered in seagull poop, lol! The hotel is not really adjacent to the water either, so most of what I saw was an open lot that apparently was awaiting development.
Otherwise, the room was very pleasant. I was really happy to have air conditioning on Olympia's first 90-degree day of the year. The "suite" also had a little kitchenette area with a mini-fridge, microwave, small coffeemaker, small bar-size sink, and a large countertop with a couple of cabinets underneath. I only used the fridge during my stay, and it kept my beverages chilled, though I worried about it being cold enough to keep some Farmers' Market fruits and vegetables crisp. (They were in there for just a day, and the refrigerator was adequate---not sure if I would keep meat in it, however.) The bath and toilet are in a separate room from the sink, which is in the entry area. There are some advantages to this layout, but the small bottles of shampoo and conditioner and the bar of soap are by the sink, so you have to remember to move those to the shower. There is a nifty dispenser for liquid soap and shampoo in the shower stall, but I thought it would have been more sensible to have the liquid soap dispenser by the sink while the bar of soap (Bath & Body Works' Coconut Verbena soap, good stuff!) should have been in the shower. That's just my preference---the liquid soap smelled of apples and you could tell it was also good stuff, but it didn't lather or rinse off very well. It probably would have worked better with a shower puff, but that wasn't provided. The bathtub was clean and deep, very comfortable for an evening bath following a long, hot day. Bed was big and cushy, and there was a HD flatscreen TV. Room was mostly quiet---you can still hear through the door people walking and chatting in the hallway, a common weakness in a lot of hotels' rooms.
My one real complaint about my stay was that the free WiFi was extremely slow in my room. I don't know why, but I have yet to stay at a hotel where the WiFi works well and consistently. There is a for-pay WiFi company that operates out of the Percival Landing Marina, apparently to provide yacht and houseboat owners with WiFi: to my annoyance my laptop kept trying to connect to that, because it was stronger than the signal from the hotel. It took four tries and some tweaking of my laptop's antenna to connect to the Phoenix's signal, but I was unable to run online videos while I was there. I was so frustrated, I didn't even try to email photos to friends and family. I suppose since I was on vacation, I should have just forgot about email and doing research on local restaurants, but the internet nowadays is like phone service or cable TV---you just expect to have it at a hotel.
I didn't get to try the free breakfast because I had to hit the road at 6 a.m. and the buffet isn't open until 6:30. I was able to get a cup of Seattle's Best Coffee for the road, however. It was a nice memento of a pleasant stay.
Room Tip: Room 310, where I stayed, is on the top, in the corner, so you only have one neighbor next door and...
