My husband and I, plus a friend spent a night at the Lyle Hotel in late Sept., 2011. We just loved the place! We were on motorcycles, having ridden over that day from the Walla Walla area. We pulled in on a Thursday evening. It took a few minutes for someone to respond to the bell at the front desk. This is a very small place, with a small staff. They were in the midst of dinner service also. But we weren't in any rush. Even though we had made reservations, we were the only registered guests for the evening. All the hotel rooms are open for viewing, so you can take your pick. We stayed with the room that I had reserved (I think #5), but our friend changed his room to one with a good view of the Columbia River. All the rooms are scrupulously clean with beautiful duvets and robes provided for use when bathing. Our room was close to the railroad tracks. There were a couple of trains during the night, but the sound didn't really bother us. The rooms are all on the outside perimeter, with the baths on the inside of the hallway. After freshening up a bit from the ride, we went into the dining room for dinner. There were only 2 other tables occupied, and they were paying their bills when we came in. We had brought in our own bottle of wine (purchased earlier that day at a Prosser winery). The server gladly opened it for us (no corkage fee as I remember). As there were no other diners at the time, we invited the server to join us for a glass of wine. Soon, another resident of the area (and friend of the server) came in and he sat down with us. We finished that bottle and moved on to finish off a couple of other bottles of wine that they (the house) had opened for the evening. After we got our food, the owners then came out from the kitchen to join us at our table. We had a most wonderful evening visiting with the staff of the hotel. Only in a very small place could you ever hope to pass the evening in this way. The owners (Steve and Marianne) were so hospitable and great cooks also. They offer a very nice continental breakfast in the hotel lobby every morning. Their banana bread is to die for! I would definitely return. It would be a great place to use as a base camp for a weekend spent exploring the wineries of the Columbia River Gorge.
