“A quiet respite with privacy and roon”

This is a special place. We went in November when the weather wasn't good but it was still lovely. The China Beach Retreat is so private facing a marsh at the mouth of the Columbia with the Pacific ocean in the background. It was a bird watchers paradise. Lots of room with a large living room and kitchen and dining room. Our first floor room was spacious with a porch sitting area. The spot is worth the drive. We had dinner and breakfasts at the Shelburne Inn. The food was excellent and the Shelburne is historic. Te woodwork is incredible. We even were able to listen and relax at a piano bar.

“One-of-a-Kind Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2011

What a treasure! Our party consisted of two couples exploring several areas in Oregon and Washington. After two nights lodging in rather busy coastal towns, the quiet ambiance of China Beach was a welcome respite. The 1900ish home is lovingly restored. The bedrooms are a cozy, luxurious step back in time. Thoughtful touches abound. The common living room and sitting areas looking out on the lovely cove and wetland are immediately relaxing. And the kitchen has all you would need to cook and dine well. Granted, it helped that no one happened to be occupying the bedroom on the main floor; a third party could change the dynamics of the living areas. But the rates are affordable enough that you could rent that third bedroom to assure yourself run of the entire house if you wanted. We all wished we could stay a second night so we could fully experience this special place. Next time, we will. Maybe several days. Breakfast at the Shelburne was terrific too.

“Great setting but BYO Breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2011

We spent the Memorial day weekend and China Beach. The setting is fantastic; beautiful, peaceful, relaxing, natural, right on the edge of an estuary at the mouth of the Columbia river. This is just the perfect place to get up in the morning, walk out on the lovely deck and sit in the rocking chairs to listen to the birds and have coffee and breakfast. The trouble is that the owners of China beach, the Shelbourne Inn, want you to leave this serene setting and drive back into town to the Inn to have breakfast in a stuffy restaurant with poor service and marginal food. Our recommendatation is to definitely stay at China Beach, but negotiate a reduced rate and bring your own breakfast. There is a kitchen, coffee maker and fridge. This way you can truely enjoy the setting.

“Peaceful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 May 2011

This ia a lovely, private B & B with an amazing view of the mouth of the Columbia River. Had a great time listening to the marsh birds and watching the river traffic. Wonderful breakfasts at the Shelburne Inn are included. Will definately go back again.

I liked the "no host" aspect with just a few other guests (none the second night) to share in this great space. Of course it helped greatly that the sun was shining for our stay!

“Fabulous”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2010

I read all the reviews prior to booking this hotel and saw while most were positive there were a couple of negatives. By far I would say that this is the best hotel on the Long Beach Peninsula. We had a down stairs room in the main house with use of the deck. The water view, contrary to another reviewer’s statement was very good. Washington Beaches typically do not have a good water view---sand dunes with grass usually hide the ocean. As this was bay we were able to see the water from the deck and our room. China Beach has the typical antiques of most B & B’s or Inn’s rather than the high end furnishings of newer luxury hotels. Altogether however they were charming---we would certainly recommend it for travelers visiting the peninsula.
