My fiance' and I rented the Cove Cottage for two nights over New Year's Eve. Let me start by saying, when I was researching places to rent on Orcas, I inquired to this property. I was told they required 3 nights stay over a holiday. However, as there was an oversight on their website that I pointed out which stated one could rent it for two nights (all we could do), they happily offered me a two night stay and apologized. The service only got better from there.
I emailed them when I had to change my reservation dates (no problem) and a couple of other times to inquire about open restaurants (somewhat of an issue in the winter) and activities. They were incredibly helpful.
We arrived in complete darkness having caught the afternoon ferry and were a bit disconcerted as we didn't have a flashlight...luckily Valerie heard us arrive, and greeted us in the driveway. She walked us down to the cottage and explained everything we needed to know and asked if we had any questions. She was incredibly warm and welcoming. The cottage is absolutely charming upon entering. Impeccably decorated and clean, we immediately wanted to just stay there and cancelled our dinner reservations across the island. We couldn't see the view until the next morning but the cottage sits right on the water with an amazing view of the harbor right from your two person hot tub. We saw deer and bald eagles while enjoying the view. They had wood stacked in the fireplace ready to go for a crackling fire. It is an incredibly romantic location and setting. We had breakfast delivered the next morning and it was decadent and delicious. (one should probably throw caution to the wind for calorie counting for this breakfast) They also took note of dietary preferances. The owners were delightfully unobtrusive...we didn't see them during our stay but we knew they were just a phone call away. The claw foot tub is amazing for soaking in the bath and they offer the luxurious Pelindaba (all natural) Lavender personal care products. I was pleased to find crisp cotton robes in the closet as well as clean slippers and large towels for the hot tub. The kitchen is well equipped with coffee, tea, burners and a toaster oven if you want to stay in (and you will!!)
The only complaint (and I mean only) is that the bed is a bit small and somewhat saggy in the middle although I still slept quite well. Hopefully they will upgrade the mattress at some point.
Helpful hints: The cottage is in a bit of a remote location on the island. We arrived after dark and the entire island is REALLY dark, including the roads and they are a ways from the ferry. It was a bit difficult to find them in the dark, even with their directions. Plan to arrive in the daylight if you don't know where you are going.
There isn't much around the area of the cottage. (1 restaurant, Deer Harbor Inn, just ok in my opinion) Perfect for privacy and quiet but a bit of a drive on REALLY winding, (and at night quite dark) roads to the shopping, parks, restaurants, or grocery. Plan on doing your shopping during the day as it's much more pleasant to drive back to the cottage during the light. (amazing views)
We didn't have phone service here (TMobile) but GPS did work (don't count on it for finding the cottage or anything else for that matter as everything has PO boxes for their address, although our GPS got us at least close) There is WiFi in the cottage.
(There is also an Ipod docking station, I don't remember this on the website and didn't bring my ipod)
All in all, we cannot wait to go back! I couldn't recommend it more!
