“Peaceful Weekend Getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

I stayed here after purchasing a Living Social deal. My only complaint was the difficulty in reaching the correct person to book, but it seems they have recently changed ownership so I am assuming that's where the confusion came from. After that, everything was great! The deluxe cottage was nicely appointed, beautiful view of the marina, jetted tub, private hot tub on the deck, comfy king bed, fireplace, mini kitchen. More than I had anticipated so I was happily surprised! 2 cozy bathrobes were in the closet, which we used each night after the hot tub and would sit by the fire and watch tv! So relaxing! Janine was the front desk staff person when we checked in, making breakfast each morning and also checked us out. She was so friendly and helpful! It was our first time to the San Juan Islands and she answered all our questions - and we had lots of them! She really made our entire experience wonderful! One night we took advantage of the BBQ's at the lobby deck and had a nice dinner on our deck! They had all the utensils, plates, napkins, seasonings - everything we needed to have a night in. The area is very quiet, sometimes we wondered if we were the only people staying there, but then we would catch a gimpse of other guests! I will definitely stay here again!

“Good room, but I'll still shop around.”

First off, I agree with other reviewers that they handled their LivingSocial deal very poorly. I was not able to get the room I paid for in the deal due to their lack of availability even four months out. Further, the additional discounts offered required things like a 7-day advance reservation which is utterly ridiculous.

Keep in mind when you go that Orcas Island is a rural area, whose residents may only leave 2x a year and where everyone knows everyone. This might help those with thinner skins who think that paying a high price for a room means you will get Ritz-Carleton service. You wont here, and the Ritz is not what you should expect. For example, the reception closes at 8pm and they just tape an envelope to the door telling you to check in in the morning, and that your room is unlocked and waiting for you. Theoretically (ours was not but thankfully we caught someone who could give us a key.) This is part of the charm of the island.

The breakfast is nothing fancy - pastries, bagels, hard-boiled eggs, granola and yogurt. The staff was friendly and cheerful and recommended great restaurants to us.

We ended up in Room 117 which is the only "Garden Suite" on the property and was perfect for us. It had a large living room area with a fireplace, a nice bathroom and a second fireplace and king-sized bed in a separate bedroom. We could see the boats on the harbor just down the hill from us, albeit through the trees so I would expect that other hotels on the island have far better views to offer. For other room types I would suggest going with the Deluxe or Garden Suite only - the "historic suites" and the "hillside" ones were much smaller and poorly located.

All in all, it was nice enough, and I could see families really enjoying the property. I was satisfied with our room for the price we paid for it. On our next trip back to Orcas though, we will definitely shop around for alternatives with better views. We will also pack in groceries as the options on the island are few and things are pricy - again, fair given the time invested in having to take a ferry to get there!

“Not at all up to the standards I expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

For a start, they sold far too many LivingSocial deals this year so that it was difficult to get the deluxe cottage when I wanted it. In fact, because we had a very limited set of dates to travel, we had to settle for one of the other rooms, with no way for any compensation. The room we had (120) was stuffy and moldy. The beds were hard, the TV tiny, and the couch far too small for two grown adults. Our room did not contain the bathrobes that were supposed to be there. The hot tub was very nice, but not nearly hot enough for my liking. We had to pay taxes when we arrived (small print on the LivingSocial coupon) that should have been included in the deal. AND, although all rooms/cottages have mini-fridges and microwaves, there were no dishes or cutlery. You had to go back down to the main building and get paper plates and plastic cutlery!! VERY TACKY! Yet, they call this a 'resort', so they only clean your room once every FOUR days - including changing towels and glassware (but I didn't see dishsoap to clean said glassware)! Additionally, they were pushing people to tip the housekeeping staff, yet most people didn't even seen housekeeping staff. The breakfast was good and the views nice, but I would not stay here again - not at the prices they charge. Also, although there were extra coupons attached to the LivingSocial deal, they were never discussed and I have no idea how you would redeem them, if you chose to do so. All-in-all, a poor deal. The Wyndham needs to do some serious refurbishing if they want this to be a viable 'resort'.

“Nice, but not excellent as the price would indicate”

I too used my Livingsocial offer last week. A few things about the offer and making reservations..my confirmation suggested I contact becky to make the reservation but when I emailed her she directed me to the booking agent so that took a few days to get accomplished. I had a few months until my reservation and forgot about the other discounts available until the week before we left. No where on the voucher does it say what company the whale whatching is through nor how to contact them. I called the number for the reservations but they said I had to contact the resort at deer harbor to find anything out. So a bit of going round and round could have been avoided with more information directly on the voucher and with the resort when booking my stay since it was a packaged offer - but that could also be on the side of LivingSocial for not suggesting these things.
The accomodations were less than stellar. We stayed in 106. The room was very stuffy when we arrived - they could have had the windows open for us to cool it down, we did find a fan in the closet but you could only place it on the floor because the screw in the bottom was stuck out further than the base so it wobbled and tipped over on a hard surface. . Now I know that being in a relaxing place the TV shouldn't be a thing to worry about but we happened to be there Sun & Mon, both NFL Football days and the TV was really small and only 1 speaker worked so it was really quite. I brought my laptop with a 17in monitor and it appeared to be bigger than the TV screen(I stayed in 2 different places later that week and paid less each night and they both had very large HDTV's). At least we were able to use the laptop to watch a couple DVD's we brought with us. All of the clear coat on the wood in the bathroom was breaking down from all of the moisture and the fact that they had all windows in the shower which was sort of weird looking into the shower from the bed - what ever gets your kicks i suppose. I had to climb into the jacuzzi tub to turn the shower on because it was so deep and away from the edge of the tub. The metal toilet paper stand was broken at the base which kept swaying back and forth when you pulled the tp from the roll(annoying/noisy during the night) - and there was very little room for that stand in the closet they put the toilet in. We were happy with the bed and pillows - but not the windows since they did not put the curtains all the way to the ceiling on the main and side windows. It was really really bright early - I'm on vacation, I WANT TO SLEEP IN! I too was not impressed with the leaving of the tip envelope - a bit tacky in my opinion.
The provided breakfast was impressive, the food was very fresh and the coffee was strong. The front desk kept up with the dishes so the dirty dishes disappeared fairly quickly. I was able to use the free wi-fi in the lobby with no problem, I do wish I could have used it in the room but not a huge concern.
The "fine print" on the voucher does state that the taxes and fee's are not included and the $17 wasn't a large amount but I feel that since they knew how many nights and how many people were coming that it should have been factored in the overall price already.
Overall - this "resort" is not the best I've stayed at and they have some work to do to get the place up to the standard of a resort.

“Beautiful location, friendly staff, wonderful room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

A friend and I took advantage of a Living Social deal to stay at this spot on Orcas Island. One never knows if the coupon value represents an over inflated price or a room so we were prepared to be disappointed. We were greeted by friendly and helpful staff at the front desk who allowed us to check in early and who got us the room we'd requested (based on other TA reviews). Our room had a huge king bed (a good thing as we are just friends and had to share it), a big soaking tub, gas fireplace, hot tub on the deck, fluffy terry robes, microwave, refrig, coffee maker, cable TV. I believe they also offer WIFi but we hadn't brought our computers. The resort is on the Deer Harbor marina and it was just a little walk on the dock to sign up for whale watching trips or kayaking. Breakfast is avaliable after 8am in the reception area; fresh brewed strong and wonderful coffee, pastries, juices, fruit and a variety of other edibles. Enough for most people to start the day. There is a swimming pool (weather too cool for us to use) and nearby trails to meander. All of our staff interactions were very positive. Most of the island restaurants are located in East Sound, an 11 mile drive on country roads, but there is a nearby inn with a dining room I plan to return with my husband next spring for a romantic getaway. Great stay.

Room Tip: Be sure to specify whether you want one or two beds.
