Patti's farm is a uniquely beautiful piece of paradise hidden away far from the beaten path. She's a fiercely independent organic livestock farmer with chickens, geese, ducks, and llamas, all of whom have personalities, and all heritage species. And the friendly old dog greets you and then lays down at your feet on the deck, which overlooks the fields and trees. Ok, the cottage is not the choicest option of this B&B, no argument there! Sure, the cottage could use some work. But here's the plus side: It offers the greatest privacy; is very quiet, even given the proximity of the poultry barn (~75 feet away); surrounded by trees, it gives the sense of remoteness; has some charming old semi-rustic furnishings, and is a few steps from the small parking lot. My wife loved it and I must admit I was riding her enthusiasm. The WIFI signal was too weak in the cottage for my wife's small laptop, but it worked fine in the house, which we were always welcome in. (The baby grand is in tune and the TV works, albeit with limited channel selections.)
It's unlikely that Patti will get the cottage in better condition, because her priorities and energy are focused on much more important things. Bainbridge Island's farms are going through some transitions, and not for the better. Patti is one of the very few (maybe the only) who are standing up to the government and big corporations who make it very difficult to stay organic and non-genetically modified.
All the same, next time we go there, we'll try a room in the house!
