My husband and I stayed at the Candlewood Suites in Winchester VA from October 15 – 17, 2010. We stayed two nights while attending the annual Balloon Festival in Millwood, VA.
I will confess that we were a bit letdown on arrival at the Winchester Candlewood Suites, having spent time at a Homewood Suites two weekends prior. That said, the property is not bad, it’s just different. The staff was very kind and helpful, but please keep in mind that this is a long-term stay hotel. As a result, the front desk is staffed from 7 am – 11 pm. There is no daily maid service – something that no other recent review has mentioned, but I believe it is an important consideration when deciding where to stay, so I am making special mention here. There is a small “honor” store in the lobby where you can pick up the basics for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Our suite on the second floor was very comfortable – although I wish there was a sofa or at least 2 recliners. Unfortunately, with two people staying in the room, only one of us had a comfortable chair to sit in when watching TV or movies. The room had the basics – kitchen, work desk and chair, king bed, recliner, TV, DVD player, separate closet, safe and bath. I liked that you could open the windows a bit for some fresh air. The suite was very clean and basic. The wireless Internet worked fine. The DVD player was a nice amenity even though our remote did not work properly even with new batteries.; For the price we paid, I believe we got good value.
There are lots of stores nearby (Big Lots and Joann’s) are across the street and many restaurants in the area for meals if you’re not inclined to cook. We ate at Golden Corral, IHOP and Chinatown (next door to the hotel).
All in all, a nice, basic, no-frills property that was fine for a long weekend trip to the Balloon Festival. Happy travels everyone!
