“Very luxurious, peaceful retreat in CW”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

We have visited Colonial Williamsburg many times and always stay at one of the CW properties. We usually like to stay in the Colonial Houses for the charm, ambience, and convenience to the attractions in the Colonial City, but since we were making relatively last-minute (1 month in advance) reservations for the Grand Illumination weekend, we were not able to get a room anywhere else other than Providence Hall Guesthouses; and even at that, we were lucky, as they only had one room available due to a cancellation that day. The room was a King Room with a fireplace. I was kind of skeptical, as I knew nothing about Providence Hall (I'd never seen it on any of our previous visits), but I knew that CW doesn't offer anything of poor quality, and....what else could we do? It was the only room available! So we took it. And I must say, we were SOOOOOO delighted by the accommodations! The reason we'd never seen PHG before is because it's tucked away in a provincial wilderness setting behind the Inn, between the tennis court and Providence Hall. It's quiet and secluded, yet only steps away from the Colonial City. We never needed to take a shuttle; we easily walked everywhere. A true hidden gem! Our room overlooked the pond and garden. The building itself is not Colonial as far as exterior architecture, but it fits in nicely with the wilderness setting and the furnishings and appointments, while modern, do reflect traditional Colonial touches, as well as oriental influence (which is also traditional to the Colonial period). The room was huge. The main room, along with the adjoining dressing room/bar/bathroom suite, was one of the largest guest quarters I've ever stayed in. Not to mention the balcony! It was so big, I joked to my husband that we could have held a party on it (only it wasn't really joking....). The dressing and bar area had nice marble effects, gilded mirrors and sconces, and fresh flowers on the bar sink. The main room was so spacious! In addition to the king size bed, wall-mounted flat screen TV tastefully hidden behind an oriental cabinet, and round table with upholstered chairs and red throw pillows, there was a large sitting area with a pull-out sofa, winged armchair, writing desk and chair, coffee table, and fireplace! Upon returning from dinner one night, we were delighted to find a gift and personal note from the hotel manager. What a nice touch to enhance our customer experience! That is the kind of thoughtful personalization that will bring us back! We also took advantage of the fireplace amenity. We called the front desk to come and light the fire quite late for us one night, and they obliged quickly and cheerfully, even heeding our call to come back and re-kindle it once the first fire died out (and I believe that was outside of the normal service hours, as it was quite late at night, so they really went above and beyond for us). There is nothing like returning from a wonderful evening of viewing the Grand Illumination, having a late-night dinner at Kings Arms Tavern, and then relaxing in front of our fire to make a perfect night in CW. I would definitely recommend Providence Hall Guesthouses. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: Ask for a King Room with a fireplace! It's worth the splurge!

“Looks great on paper, but...”

We chose to stay in Providence Hall for the convenience of being in a Colonial Williamsburg hotel for the New Year's holiday, and we figured the hall would provide a little more privacy for a couple celebrating New Years without the kids.
The hotel room was lovely and spacious - though it did lack some details I would normally expect for such a pricey space (no turn down service, towels could be mistaken for exfoliation tools, etc). The other disappointment was that there is no on-site staff - no front desk, everything required a phone call and a wait (and the beverage vending machine was out of order).
Still - it was lovely, and the town a fabulous experience as always!
The big problems came with New Year's Eve...
The party at the Lodge, at $100 per person, was a bit of a disappointment. Buffet food, New York style seating (8 people to a table, whether you knew them or not) and a passable band playing '60's and '70's disco and Motown with a crowd of primarily 55 and up did not make for the festive evening we were expecting. It bears noting, the hotel staff would tell us nothing about the party prior to the ticket purchase - just what was on the website, which wasn't much.
Abandoning the party in favor of an evening spent with champagne in front of our room's fireplace - we were ringing in the new year the way any couple out for a romantic New Year's Eve would.
We were interrupted by a knock on the door, and what appeared to be a police officer (later we realized it was an armed security officer). The officer informed us there had been a noise complaint (the TV was louder than we were) and that he had been outside of our room listening. This was at 11:45 pm... the entire town was celebrating. Just 15 minutes later there were fireworks going off that were so loud they rattled windows.
It took an hour of phone calls, a late night visit from the head of hotel security and a considerable amount of unpleasantness to get a semi apology from the hotel, a promise that if the couple complained again the staff would move them to another room, and a slight adjustment to our bill.
Apparently, the walls in the Hall are so thin that a normal couple cannot engage in marital relations without disturbing their neighbors, and in Colonial Williamsburg, New Year's Eve revelry should be contained to dancing to the oldies.

Room Tip: Be warned, the walls are thin - paper thin. The rooms overlooking the tennis courts are very nice. S...

“Disappointed but great location”

Having visited Williamsburg and stayed in Providence Hall many times, our expectations were based on past experiences. We were very disappointed in the lack of details that we had seen in prior visits. Just the little things like no shower caps, no robes, no turn-down service. One would expect when spending over $300 a night for a room that these items would have been there. The huge rooms are marginally well appointed but so are most Hampton Inns these days.
To be fair, our dinner in the Regency Room was outstanding and the service exactly what we have come to expect when visiting the Williamsburg Inn.

Room Tip: The rooms are large and would easily accomodate a family of 4.

“Spacious Rooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

Providence Hall is located adjacent to the Williamsburg Inn and is considered part of the Inn. This is where one checks in. We booked our priority tickets with the Inn's concierge - and had a morning carriage ride, a decorations tour, and enjoyed a concert at Kimball Theater. Our room was very spacious. It was clean, had an empty refrigerator, hair dryer, coffee maker, iron, and ironing board. Only thing missing was a bathrobe. One especially nice feature was two separate sink areas so my husband and I did not have to share. There was a sofa in our room that was a hide a bed. We did not use it, but we could have had an additional person or two and not felt cramped. It was also very quiet. We enjoyed breakfast at the Inn and we were close to the actvities in Colonial Williamsburg.

“Inside much nicer than the outside.”

We had a great 2-night stay at the Providence Hall Guesthouses in the spring. It is very convenient to stay right within Colonial Williamsburg, and it's really nice to be able to avail oneself of the concierge etc. services of the Williamsburg Inn (Providence Hall guests are assigned to the Inn for guest services).

The building is not much to look at from the outside. Frankly, it looks like a somewhat run-down dormitory or motel from the outside. But once you get to your room, it's substantially better.

Mind you, it's not the Four Seasons or the Inn, but it's perfectly nice. The room is well furnished, is a good size for a family (the sofa bed in each room is why families inquiring at the Inn are directed to the Providence Hall guesthouses). We got a nice quiet room at the back of the building, looking over the pond.

The bathroom could probably stand some renovation, but that's probably quibbling.

It was a perfectly nice, comfortable stay in a perfectly nice, comfortable room.
