We spent two nights at the end of January during a school holiday. Apparently, our school system was not the only one with Monday and Tuesday off, because the resort was sold out Sunday night. For your reference, our boys were 11 and 13 years old at this visit.
First, the bad, before I get caught up in all the good:
1. Check-in was absolutely horrible. I think I stood in line for an hour and a half. A staff member did come down the line to issue wrist bands for the rest of the family to use the water park. I don't think they could do much more than get more workstations at the front desk. Some of the wait is because the front desk staff is so thorough about making sure you are taken care of before sending you on your way, and I wouldn't want them to lose that. I see this is a recurring theme on the other reviews, so just take it as a given until the hotel figures out how to get more cleaning and front desk staff on duty at the peak hours/days.
2. Because the lodge was so full on Sunday night, our reservation had us switching rooms on Monday. One guy at the front desk told us we'd have to check out of our first room and then wait to check in later. He wasn't too clear on what we were to do with all our bags in between. Luckily, when I called back, the woman answering the phone was able to extend our check-out until our new room was ready. We only had to move a few doors down, so once it was sorted out, it was easy. I just think the staff should have been a little more on the ball with making this more seamless from the beginning - I've had room changes at other hotels, and most of them have even moved our bags for us if we were out of the room.
OK, now for the good stuff:
The woman at check-in, Adrian, was extremely friendly and helpful - she even recomputed our rate when I gave her my military ID at check-in (I missed the HEROES rate for the Sunday night). While the lodge has its own restaurants, she and the other staff were quite willing to provide local eating advice.
After checking in, there were plenty of staff to hold doors and provide directions. Everything is access controlled by your wristband, so not having to swipe in while holding a bunch of bags and suitcases is a real benefit.
The Queen beds in both suites were extremely comfortable (not Hilton level, but better than Hampton Inn). The bunk beds were merely average.
The rooms had a microwave, coffee machine (not terribly wonderful), and a large dorm fridge. There are several different layouts, so take the time to figure out which kind you want. The Kid Cabin was cool even for the older kids, just so they could sleep in a separate "space". The room was not crowded for us (Family Suite on night 1, Kid Cabin on night 2).
As for the water park, we found the lifeguards very attentive and scanned the blind spots frequently. All of the water park staff also had good attitudes. The clear rafts make for a safer swim. Rides and pools for all ages. I even enjoyed the "over 21" hot tub for a few minutes.
My kids' favorite ride was the Flow Rider, a knee board type ride. A good tip: they offer a "Night Howler" package where 4-10 riders can pay $20 each for an hour of riding and instruction after hours. Sunday night's instructors (1/29) were excellent - when someone wiped out early in their turn, they would set them back up and work with them on getting through that next step. Monday night's instructors (1/30) really didn't do anything more than run the ride like normal, so the expert riders monopolized the time, and the poor kids who wiped out early probably only got 2 minutes of riding out of the whole hour.
After a long day in the water park, the younger children got to enjoy a "show" and story time at 8pm and then headed off to bed. A short time later, when the water park closed at 9, the lobby was swamped pajama-clad kids with wand playing MagiQuest, which is really a magic themed scavenger hunt of sorts. The first time costs about $30 each, but each return trip is only about $12 if you bring your wand back. It certainly kept the kids busy, and my wife too :)
There are a few restaurants in the facility. We had pizza from Pizza Hut Express (which isn't instant like it is at an airport) and we got fruit cups from the main restaurant that were good. The prices are expensive but not outrageous (resort prices, not theme park prices if that makes sense to you). Pierce's BBQ is 3 minutes down the street heading East and is well worth the trip.
Overall, this was a good experience. If we hadn't had the issues I listed up top, I would have rated this a 5.
Room Tip: Look at the options - an extra $20 to give the kids their own almost enclosed space might be well wo...
