Five years ago I wrote a glowing review of this hotel. It was built in the 40's or 50's, it was beautifully maintained and staffed by the family who owned it. A bit like stepping back in time to the old "motor court" hotels. It was absolutely full of happy people--laughing, swimming, sitting on the deck chairs on the porches in front of the rooms. While the property was older, it was meticulously maintained and the effect was "charming".
Unfortunately, the family retired, and "charming"has now turned into "rundown". At first glance, the property looked good...but the something was off. Clue #1: The parking lot and grounds were deserted on a hot Sunday afternoon during a busy week in Williamsburg. Clue #2: When I entered the lobby to register I was almost bowled over by the intense smell of garlic. Now I love my garlic--but this was simply permeating the (empty) lobby, and was very distracting. I got out of there as fast as I could (only made a very quick trip in again to drop off keys at the end of our stay (still quite aromatic). Very bad first impression. Clue #3: Even my not so picky 15-year-old took one look at the pool and decided he didn't really need a swim to end a hot day. The formerly sparkling pool was no longer--the water was slightly green and fuzzy looking, and the tiles were broken and mildewed. And so on...with outside lamps smashed and left unrepaired, the laundry out of commission, the once charming breakfast cottage now dominated by two large vending machines, the bathroom drain broken, the bathroom floor dirty around the endeges with little peices of hair (not mine) in the corner, the door and wall that were half painted over a repair, the funky smell in the hallway...
We paid $80 dollars fro a very large room for the three of us. Aside from the bathroom floor, the room was very clean and the beds comfortable. An acceptable continental breakfast was available. As a place to lay my head--a fine deal at the price. You do get what you pay for; but we used to get a whole lot more once upon a time. These are EASY fixes. It is just very sad to see a "grand old lady" go downhill due to lack of common maintenance and a little attention to detail. Shame on Quality Inn for their lack of quality control and for not working with the new owners to train them and/or help them keep up the once sterling property and reputation! I once gave this place all "fives"--now it's jsut average.
