“Huge disappointment”

Grim looking hostel with terrible service, very unpleasant atmosphere and we left covered in insect bites. It may be cheap but it's still too much to pay for this place.

We made three attempts to make a reservation via telephone as we were travelling from Washington DC, only to be told they don't take reservations, and then on arrival they wanted our reservation number.

Within five minutes the owner had told us America plan to invade England as they need a holiday home, he hates the French and wouldn't ever consider going to Europe as he's not interested in any of it,

Hostel itself is not up to the standard we've become used to in our month's travels so far - no towels, no air conditioning, no internet access, no breakfast, no water fountain, old smelly carpets, bed sheets that came from a yard sale (seriously), people actually living there long term, and not even a consideration to hold your luggage after checkout without payment, even for one hour after a four night stay, bearing in mind checkout is 9.30am.

We found the owner and the Russian girl he had hired extremely rude, agressive and offensive to the point that we were quite afraid to be around him. We were also told he treated the rest of the staff very badly. Makes for an extremely unpleasant atmosphere which really ruins your stay,

Spend a few more dollars and go to a motel with a pool, the streets are lined with them and they are all just a block from the beach so don't be put off by distances from the city centre, it's just a very long beach with amenities all the way along.

Am surprised Hostelling International would recommend this place, maybe they need to re-visit.

“Angie's is great!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2008

Angie's is great! It is no longer a B&B, despite being listed as such on some sites. We stayed in the off season (1 week in late September) and really enjoyed it. There are two apartments with a lot of charm and ambience (these were built in the early 1900s), several modern cottages and a youth hostel. Angie's is great for the small family, couple, or single person.

Pro: Staff and owners are wonderful. They are helpful, easy to talk with and responsive to your needs. Location is great - we walked everywhere. The staff kept the place clean and changed the linens almost every day. Off-street parking. Located on a dead-end street so little traffic to contend with. Ambience - if you like funky old buildings and eclectic decorating styles, this is the place for you! In the older apartments (cottages are more modern) there are huge ocean murals on the walls and mismatched furniture. The floors are not level - all in all it was like visiting your favorite grandmother's house at the beach. Just love it!

Cons: The stairs. We stayed in an upstairs apartment and it was hard on my mother's knee (she had just had surgery). The smoke alarm in the kitchen. It worked too well and anything in the toaster set it off instantly, which became a running joke with us. Noise. The jets flying overhead were a bit loud at times and some of the crowds with The Neptune Festival got loud in the evening.

If you are expecting the extreme cleanliness of a Hilton Hotel and the service that goes with it - forget it. It is clean, and the staff keeps it up, but you are on your own in regards to room service, baggage handling, etc.

Would I stay there again? YES! Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes!

“Great comfy feel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2007

Great service from staff and Manager, Brad. The queen and king rooms are affordable and clean. The queen room has a small private porch. It's basically a nice home-like studio with hotel service. 2 blocks from the beach and 4 blocks from the supermarket. If you like a more cozy feel this place is for you.

  • Liked — Cozy feel and private porch in queen room.
  • Disliked — No pool.

“Bot bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2006

Not a bad little B&B - good location and clean - but was a major problem... no a/c in the room I was in (or any i think).

The three fans in the room i was in just wafted the hot air around a bit and nothing else.

If you're going to Virginia beach when it's hot (which most people do) - don't stay here - you won't get any sleep.

A mayor flaw of an otherwise nice place. Friendly (and eccentric!)owner, good location, good facilites, tidy... but all let down by the unbearable heat in the rooms...

  • Liked — location / staff
  • Disliked — The HEAT!
  • Tips/Secrets — Spend a bit more and go somewhere that can cope with the high temperatures.

“Angie's is a gem!”

My husband and I stayed at Angie's for the first time in September, 2004, for Labor Day Weekend. We ran the Rock and Roll Half Marathon.

The location of Angie's is fabulous; you can leave the car parked and walk almost anyplace you need to go. The beach is less than a block away.

Accomodations are spotlessly clean, well above average. The staff are phenonmenally friendly. Also a youth hostel, one has the opportunity to meet travelers from around the world. They are family friendly, and they provide beach umbrellas for no charge. You can also grill out or borrow books and games.

Now, my accomodation was a B&B room on "Cottage Row." It had a private bath and a kitchenette, so I could fix a snack if I so chose. The "breakfast" is at a local and very close restaurant, so you can have whatever you want for breakfast.

You will not be disappointed by this place!
