“Reasonable choice for a D.C. visit”

We stayed at the Extended Stay America location in Springfield, VA because it was close to a Metro station and because we had vouchers for two nights that we had won at a fundraising auction. The hotel applied the vouchers to the first two nights of our three-night stay, which happened to be the more expensive nights, leaving us with only the third, cheaper night to pay for. We got one of the bigger rooms, which included a full kitchen and a sitting area with sleeper sofa separated from the main bedroom area by a partial partition. The room was spacious and clean and had two TVs. It was marked as nonsmoking, but had a definite smoky odor that permeated our clothes. The hallways were also noticeably smoky. The location is not very scenic, across the street from a large warehouse, but we weren't around much except to sleep, so that was OK. The Metro station might have been walkable in better weather (i.e., not summer), but we chose to drive about a mile instead. The hotel is pretty convenient to a large mall and nearby shopping areas, and to a fair number of restaurants, decent if not really fine dining. On the whole, not exactly a resort, but it served our purposes. The staff was polite, competent and helpful.

“Excellent Service, close to Metro”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 April 2010

For our recent family trip to Washington, DC, I was trying to find a hotel that had free parking, would be close to a Metro station and with reasonable rates. We found this to be a good location. Walk out the back end of the property, onto a little access road that leads to the Franconia/Springfield Metro station (last stop of the Blue Line).... about 15 to 20 minute walk. The staff were very helpful. The room had a kitchenette with two stove-top burners, microwave, a sink and a fridge. Wi-fi connection was excellent, even with multiple computers. Not far from a mall. A few restaurants nearby, but we ended up going down to the next exit on the freeway for a better selection.

“Horrible experience doesn't even begin to describe it”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2009

I stayed in this hotel for one night only (and that felt like eternity)
The room had a sweet smell of sweat and heavy chemicals to cover it up
I had to open both windows to even be able to stay in the room
The place was filthy, with sticky hallway floor which you could tell were not cleaned for very long time
This was the first time in my life when to “survive” the night by taking the sleeping bag out of my jeep and putting it on the bed so I didn’t have to touch the linen.
In the morning I ran out of this place like “bat out of hell” happy that this miserable night was over.
Honest advice, save yourself and your family a horrible experience and DO NOT STAY in this place.

FYI: I checked in to nearby Comfort Inn and boy was I happy when I walk into the place
It was clean and pleasant and …..again it was clean….

“not the hilton, but it is not's as bad as you think”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2009

having read several reviews, we were kind of worried that this would be a bad experience. however, we were pleasantly surprised. we went in with low expectations which helped. it's not a residence inn but it was okay. it reminded me of a college dorm. the room carpet did have a smell sometimes-it was mostly that gym locker at the y carpet smell from chlorine soaking into the carpet. i would advise opening the window and keeping the air on. the air worked and sometimes we froze a little but it was better than having the smell. having a full size fridge and freezer in the room was nice. some other reviews complained about being on a dead end street, which it was. it was too isolated from stuff. you have several strip malls near there. they are probably a long walk away but it would be a very short drive. as far as the metro, it is a 10 minute walk. you go behind the hotel past the dumpster and walk behind the apartments to the walking path. others complained that the apartments were sketchy and they were scared to walk behind there. the apartments are not ghetto looking and it was safe to walk back there. if not, you could always walk through the apartments. families were usually out walking with kids on bikes. just past the apartments, you follow an access road that takes you down to the metro's park and ride parking deck. you just go inside up to 3rd floor and take the station bridge over to to station to get on. there is no signs from hotel that tell you where the metro is. we figured it out from reading other reviews and just driving around. the springfield stop is the end of the blue line. that means you will always get a seat in the morning. coming back in the afternoons was not bad either. we stayed there for 4 nights. i probably wouldn't like to stay there for a month but for a short visit it was great. the desk staff was nice. they remembered and were quite helpful. they do close the desk at night (i think it was 11 or 11:30) but you can call someone for emergencies. the laundry facilities were nice to have too. it was 3.00 a load (1.50 to wash and 1.50 to dry). detergent was 1.00. as far as tv, they have cable with 3 channels of showtime. also, you pay a one time fee of 5 bucks for wi-fi. so if you stay one month or one week, price is still same. you just call downstairs for the password. towel exchange is downstairs at desk and trash room is on each floor. they only clean once a week but you can pay more if you want some refresh service for your room. it's quiet, fairly clean, and a good deal for the money. just don't go in expecting the hilton.

“Abysmal Customer Service, but don't worry, it is also dirty!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2009

I stayed here for 6 weeks as temporary housing during a move - and if timing and finances has allowed, I would have stayed anywhere else! I would highly recommend that if you do hot HAVE to stay here, that you choose another hotel in the area - any other hotel in the area.

The hotel is located on a dead end near a huge apartment complex and across from a huge GSA warehouse. It is not within walking idstance to anything, It offers next to no amenities - the workout room is miniscule, the laundry room was filthy much of the time, and the front desk closes between the hours of 11pm and 7am - so definitely don't get locked out of your room or have any emergency during those hours.

The price/value is average at best - although they do have a reduced rate for a monthly rental, it is still not a good value because the place is so terrible. In retrospect I wish that I had paid more to stay elsewhere.

Customer service is an alien concept to the staff here. Although it is an extended stay facility, I would have expected that there might be some small element of hotel service remaining. Be aware that there is no expiration date on your monthly contract and they will interpret that your month is up according to the whim of the day and then charge you extra for "overstaying"...and never apologize or even explain their perspective when you raise the issue. Even the hotel manager basically dismissed my complaint without any attempt to solve the problem; he said that he would "communicate that to the management"...?! What? Aren't YOU the management? Even the manager is apparently unable to make a decision or offer an example of customer service...so you can imagine how useless dealing with anyone else was...

The housekeeping was horrid - nothing was ever actually clean after they visited, but it did have a funky odor. The hallways and elevators were always dirty - like the kind of dirty with chunks of dirt and used tissues laying around. The internet is slow (although it is cheap if you are there for multiple nights). The kitchenette which was supposedly stocked for basic survival and meals for at least the amount of guests in the ruoom had one fork, one knife, and two spoons, and two old acrylic classes which were "fraying" at the top...insufficient and unsatisfactory at best.

The place is best avoided if at all possible!
