We went to Cuba for our honeymoon & we were fortunate enough to stay at the Blau Colonial. We had heard some bad reviews about Blau before going and so were apprehensive. Our minds, however, were put at rest very quickly. At the main reception area we noticed the very neatly kept garden, which were worked on regularly during our stay, and the buildings surrounding it had character. The people that worked there were fantastic and very helpful. We cant thank them all enough for their hospitality from beginning to end. The customer relations man, Tito, arranged for a bottle of sparkling wine to be waiting for us in our room and an invitation to a romantic meal in one of their restaurants as it was our honeymoon. Our room was perfect with perfect views from the balcony. Our room was on the corner of one of the buildings so from one side we had sea views and the other the pool bar. Admittedly not every room could have these views, and we cant review every room but ours was clean and airy and the maids kept it like this every day on request. The view of the sea goes without saying..... it was out of this world and a stones throw away!
We didnt really go for the activities, but there were always lots to do and in the end, we did play alot of water polo, as it was really fun! The activities were all set up by the entertainment team, lead by George, Peter, Kelly and lots more that worked tirelessly, day and night to keep everyone entertained. There was entertainment available on the evenings, the talented dancers being the highlight. If you leave your room on a night, be prepared to be bitten by mosquitos! Take lots of repellent. A groundsman drove around the resort on a tractor which sprayed a repellent at around 7o'clock each night. This only works for a while! A band would often play at different bars on the evenings. They would also play in the buffet restaurant and ask to play for you at your table. The best advice we can give is to buy a CD from them and you dont need to feel obliged to tip from then on. Tipping anybody who works there can be daunting at first. It is an all inclusive resort so generally the only money you need to carry each day is a few Cuban convertables. One CUC is appropriate for a bar tender, waitress or maid each day or so. Don't think that you need to tip every time you visit the bar or talk to a Cuban person. They really appreciate a tip or even a gift, but we never felt pressured.
We took a couple of day trips out of the resort at reasonable costs. Remember, though, Cuban roads and drivers are different from British ones! The food at Blau was good and the choice was wide! The grounds, including the fresh water pool and bars were fantasticly maintained and the staff such as Liber and Yamil (bar staff) and Clae (a life guard) to name a few where amazingly friendly. Words can't really describe what a brilliant two weeks we had in Cuba... If you are willing to open your mind up to a wonderful country you'll be well looked after at the Blau and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Thankyou to everyone at the Blau Colonial.
