Recent trend seems to have been for better reviews of this hotel.....unfortunately not justified by our experience.
Booked for convenience of central location and that's certainly a plus......what isn't is the hotel's more precise location on a street of bars and right next to a nightclub. Lots of late night street life, some of it pretty loud and drunken. Not for everyone. The very loud bass thrum from the night club - along with the clearly audible revellers - goes on into the early hours of the morning ( not sure whether that's every night, perhaps not in the early week ? ) Restful, it isn't.
On that basis alone, there's no way I could recommend to anyone with young children.
Beyond that, there's just too much that's slipshod and careless.
Our room was a reasonable size but sloppily decorated - just small snagging details like paint on light fitments that clearly weren't removed - and bizarrely arranged. Bed faced TV and desk with a hard chair but without enough space to pull out the chair and watch TV. Or sit and use the desk for anything else because TV in the way. A large fan was placed beside the bed - in August maybe but early March ? - in such a way that left where it was anyone getting out of bed couldn't avoid walking straight into it. Particularly since there were no bed side lamps. Meanwhile easily half of the floor space of the room was completely empty......nowhere to sit and read without picking up hard chair from desk and sitting in the middle of the floor with no light.....all quite odd.
The room was at least reasonably clean. However for a double occupancy room, there was only one bath towel. Hysterically ancient wall-attached hair dryer. No central light, one of the uplighters didn't work and, as above, no bedside lamps. The bed was clearly long past it's best.....mattress and base both more or less gone - and really not so comfortable. Also only one thin duvet in March and the heating turned down low.
Reception did on request provide an extra lamp and duvet, so points for that. Less so, the general professionalism. The lad we mostly dealt with seemed a likeable sort and dealt with direct requests but his manner didn't convey any particular interest or 'corporate identity'. Check-in routine was very basic - nothing by way of 'welcome', we were allocated a smoking room without being told - on check-out he had to be prompted for a receipt. When he went to the room to deliver a lamp he knew I'd stepped outside for 5 minutes but, having checked us in, that it was double occupancy. He walked straight into the room without knocking, surprising my wife !
There may be one or two more details I've forgotten here but the theme is clear. One final thing, if you do take your chances and stay here, ask for a room away from the lift. It's an elderly model and very noisy......another thing to disturb your rest but probably not an issue unless, like us, you find yourself in a room next door.
