“Avoid this hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2011 via mobile

I have used this hotel twice now for 2 weeks in November due to working in the Havering borough area. The first week was not too bad, however the second week was not a pleasant experience & similar to those of other reviewers on Trip Advisor. I was allocated a room with a very peculiar smell similar to chemicals or it may have been cannabis! There was also an awful wet stain down the wall next to the bed. I complained and fortunately was given another room which was better but very cramped. The bed dipped in the middle which did nothing for my already weary back.

The worst bit of the stay was having to visit reception every evening when I returned from work to request basic items such as toilet roll, tea bags & even towels which had not been left in my room. I began to wonder if my room had even been cleaned, if it wasn't for the bed being made I would have concluded no one had been in my room.

The noise from the market place first thing in the morning is dreadful. Although the lodge is in the centre of Romford, beware if you are a lone woman staying here as it is located down a very lonely road which looks like a back alley. There were some peculiar characters down that road at night including some menacing chavs throwing a supermarket trolley at a lamppost...

This lodge wasn't cheap either costing £55 a night. I wouldn't stay there again. It was not a pleasant experience & I definitely do not recommend this hotel.

I would not stay here again

“Luck of the draw”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

I stayed here a few times a a month. The rooms vary vasty in terms of smell, size, some had broken mirrors, broken furniture, and unclean bathrooms, others a lot better.very much luck of the draw. Convenient location, no car park, but street parking overnight with a short walk to hotel.

“Its a Travelodge”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

Stayed here for one night on business trip.. Cannot say that I agree with all the negative reviews. My room was very clean and tidy with no smells ! Check in was friendly and efficient although this was spoiled three hours later by the receptionist phoning me to ask when I was going to check in. When I told them I was already checked in they had to ask me what my room number was ?! Duh...what do you expect
I asked for a quiet room (213) but wow it was noisy with traffic etc passing under the windows - if this was a quiet room then what are the others like?

We stayed here for my friends 21st birthday, we asked for two rooms near each other but where put on two separate floors! Our bathroom smelt of stagnant water, when we complained they simply said "It's the drains there's nothing we can do about it, and we don't have any other rooms, you'll have to use your friends bathroom" .. Our friends rooms tv didn't work, we complained again and nothing happened, also the premises smelt of cannabis. We was woke up at 7am by banging! The staff where unhelpful. What a good 21st birthday! Don't stay here.

“A Nice Place to base yourself in”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

After reading many bad reviews on here, I was very worried about staying here with my grandparents. But I need not have worried as it was a very enjoyable experience. We had travelled from Stoke and had some trouble finding the hotel, eventually flagging down a passing relative, would you believe, to show us where it was. This was a minor glitch though and when we did arrive we found staff to be very helpful.

At first we thought we were on different floors, as I am visually impaired this was a concern but fortunately the staff found 2 rooms for us on the ground floor, albeit at different ends of the corridor. My room wasn't quite ready on arrival so I put my bags in my grandparents room. The staff were happy for us to leave the car in the loading bay while we unpacked and this was a great help, as parking near the hotel is not easy.

The room I was in was comfortable and clean, and a good size. It did feel strange being on the ground floor though as I am more used to being on the 2nd or 3rd, so I felt a little nervous about going to sleep the first night we were there.

The bed was firm enough but the pillows were very thin, I ended up using the memory foam pillow I had brought for the car journey as well as the 2 on the double bed.

The hotel is right in the centre of Romford which is good for getting around, but there is some traffic noise, however I am a heavy sleeper so didn't notice unless I was awake and listening for it. Wifi is also extremely expensive, I would recommend you find an internet cafe or do what I did and use a relative's connection if you visit them at home.

We didn't have breakfast, as we were visiting family and ate out or at someone's home, but the hotel served its purpose for us very well and does not deserve all the bad press.
