I am a Secondary school teacher who has just returned from a 4 night trip to the Esplendid with 130 13-14 year old female pupils. The hotel claims to specially cater for school parties, but it proved totally inadequate.
The biggest problem was the hotel's indifferent approach to the behaviour of pupils from other school parties. Boys from a French school were climbing up fire escapes or whatever was to hand in order to access our pupil's baclonies. One even turned his bed sheet into a rope to climb into the room below. There were even cases of violent behaviour, such as glass bottles being thrown. However, there was absolutely no security or staff presence around most of the hotel of an evening when this happened. Particularly on our first night, many of our pupils were terrified. The receptionists seemed totally uninterested in our complaints, insisting that such bad behaviour often happened and refused to address it.
The second problem was noise. We were not informed prior to the trip that a very loud disco took place every night between 9PM to midnight, making it practically impossible for any pupil to get any sleep before this time. Other noises too were a problem. Doors were totally uninsulated for sound, making our lack of sleep and privacy big issues.
Thirdly, this hotel was grossly overcrowded. We were informed shortly before the trip that 4, rather than 3 of our girls would be sharing each room. This meant that many of the beds used were broken and were very tightly packed in together, making them a major fire hazard. Meal times too were often chaotic. While the food was admittedly good, long queues and a shortage of tables meant a meal normally took at least 1 hour.
The lack of effective management and an apparent uninterest that the staff showed to a rather obvious set of issues that would arise from a hotel full of teenage pupils made all of the teachers in our party highly stressed and feel totally unvalued as customers.
