A lovely friendly hotel all staff could not be faulted from cleaners, bar staff, reception, catering, top omelletes for breakfast shame they weren't served everyday at breakfast food can be samey samey but you could swap to lunch and go out in the evening - and the chips with everyting comment no one forces you to eat chips !!! The resort is not commercialised to much, all in all lovely friendly place and the bar prices in the hotel were cheaper than some of the bars in resort and if you load your room card up with euros you get a further ten percent off !!! see you next year xx

“Excelent quality/price hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2010

My friend and I stayed in this hotel for 3 nights last Summer. We weren't into partying much or sunbathing. We primarily chose it for its price (€100, 3 nights, 1/2 pension for two people) and Barcelona (relative) proximity. it is well connected with Barcelona with Renfe trains which runs frequently and although it would take almost an hour to reach it, we thought it was worth it. It was Summer and the city was packed with tourists and it'd be difficult to find a decent room in a hostel in the city center, plus we would have probably paid double the price we paid for staying at Mar Blau.
Hotel room was spacious with a little balcony and very clean. The staff were friendly and spoke excellent English (I think most of them were Dutch).
It is ideal for family with children as there is an outdoor swimming pool with activities for kids. There were many old couples, a good sign that the place is pretty safe.
Both breakfast and dinner were self-service with variety of food. Fantastic!

Not to be confused with Mar Blau apartments which are located nearby in a rather dubious neighborhood. Print a map of Calella as it may be a little difficult to spot it in the complex area of hotels.

“Very pleasant stay. Hotel not for party animals.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2009

Just come back from a lovely 5 day break in Calella. Booked via Alpharooms, transfers by shuttledirect. Requested a double room with a sea view and got just that, we were very pleased with our room. Food is nice, good selection considering that they are catering for many nationalities. Some evenings better than others. Wine with meal of good standard and starts at just 6 euros a bottle. The good thing was that they save it for you if you can't manage a full bottle every evening. Breakfasts very good, especially on the days the chef made omelettes. Pool is lovely, quite cold but just what you need on a hot day. Plenty of sunbeds, you pay extra for umbrellas. Only experience evening entertainment on one evening, Thursday, and was very good magician. There were facilities for children, i.e play areas, but no children when we went in September. Disappointed that there was a gym, jacuzzi and sauna there, but you had to pay 5 euros a day for it, so didn't bother.

I think hotel is used for coach parties a lot, this made it quite a quiet and gentile place to stay, which is what we wanted. Hotel is close to quite busy road for party goers, and there was a couple of nights when our sleep was disturbed by drunken stag and hen parties. If you are looking for a quieter stay I would suggest you request a pool view room, as this is away from the main road and may be quieter.

Beach very nice and only a 5-10 minute stroll. Shelves steeply so probably unsuitable for young children. Train station about a mile away, but takes you to Barcelona for about 7 euros return. Best to get off at Place de Catalonia, this takes you to centre of Barcelona. Also market at Santa Suzanna on Tuesdays is worth visit. Our best trip was to Tossa de Mar. Not very easy to get there, 1 train and 2 different buses, but worth it.

I would definitely recommend this hotel and I would visit again. I liked Callela, it is a real town with lovely old buildings and narrow streets. Though if you prefer a beach resort type holiday you may prefer Santa Suzanna, it was clean and pleasant, but not so interesting as Calella.

“Really Great hotel -”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2008

We've just come back from a week at the Mar Blau and would recommend the hotel to everyone. It was spotlessly clean, all the communal areas were nicely decorated and all toilets spotless - even the poolside ones!
The rooms although clean and basic, had airconditioning and an excellent maid service daily - we were really well looked after. Complimentary soaps, shampoos and shower gels were replaced as used and clean towels every second day.
The pool and surrounding area were fabulous with plenty of beds and parasols - great for adults and children.
All the staff without exception, were very eager to please and even refused to allow you to carry your own drinks from the poolside bar to your sunlounger.
The food was of a high standard with plenty of variety and everything was fresh and well cooked.
The only downside was the choice of deserts - these appeared to be the same each night with the exception of one choice. This is a very trivial downside to what we considered a really top quality hotel - well worth its 3 stars definately.

  • Liked — The pool area
  • Disliked — Balcony overlooked by neighborouging hotel
