“Esoteric Esplai!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

I could write a mini essay on my stay at the esplai, calella, this August but will keep it brief! Did a 2 hotel stay, based on my finances, with Esplai being the first part-6nights all inclusive starting 30th August. I was a little concerned about some reviews but usually like to find things out for myself so booked anyway! This is a fairly large, clean hotel where the staff were all very polite and friendly to my husband & I. I agree that the food choice is limited if you dine later and my husband hated the fact that you had to hand a token over at the bar, get a plastic cup and return the cup in order to get another drink! The bathroom was extremely slippy after showering as our room had a forward facing showerhead-as in facing outwards onto the floor!
Being the last week of college holidays the hotel was full of very young people, mainly German, Dutch or Czech and I think my husband and I were the oldest people there that week [we're 50!]. However, it didnt stop us sitting round the pool, playing snooker or otherwise enjoying ourselves. The youngsters were mostly polite to us and the noise didn't go on all night-it was actually quite quiet after midnight, with only a few minutes of joviality when they all returned from whichever nightclub they had been at. The most offensive language came from some young english lads who got the room next to ours, but after my husband leaned over the balcony to say hello and offer them a newspaper they obviously were mortified to realise that their neighbours were old enough to be their parents, were english and would have been able to hear and understand everything they'd just been talking about! They were good as gold after that! Funnily enough we overheard reception taking a complaint about some guests singing and playing a guitar until 5am-which turned out to be the german students lecturers [the only other middle aged people staying there]!
So-high season-if your interested in mixing with young, energetic 18-25's, aren't too much of a food connoisseur and love saving money, you can't go wrong with the Esplai!

Room Tip: Lower floors seemed to have less noisy guests. Ask for a private balcony [we were 1st floor with our...

“Hotel Esplai”

Went to the hotel Esplai on a hen party 2 weeks ago. The hotel was clean however the staff attitude left alot to be desired. The breakfast was poor however the lunchtime meal and evening meal was very nice. Only thing is to make sure your there when meal time starts as they didnt top up the food as it was used so if you want a late meal all you get is what is left with fresh chips. The main diet is pork, pork and yes pork.
The all inclusive option was a joke your given a plastic token and you exchange this for a plastic cup. No cup/token no drink simple?? even with a bright purple wrist bank on your arm. It advertised entertainment... there was nothing which made you not want to stay in the hotel and enjoy the all inclusive option paid for. watch out for muggings, i was mugged on 2nd day
bag stolen down by the beach so beware.
all in all we had a fantastic time, the hotel caters for every nationality but English. No information in English apart from telling you what time your transport will pick you up to take you home when its time to leave

Room Tip: Ask for room facing the pool as it isa much nicer view than the back of the hotel

“Not so good”

Esplai Hotel is located near a beautiful beach. It has a nice swimming pool area and Free Wifi.
On the down-side it has a diner with very poor quality and where the food doesn't change noticably during a one-week stay. Even All Inclusive guests can only order one small plastic glass of drink at one time. So you can't have a glass of water to your glass of wine. It's extremely frustrating.
The staff doesn't wan't to help. We couldn't even get a map of the area from the reception.

In conclusion: Calella is nice but don't get All Inclusive at Esplai

“Just for under age of 22”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2011

Good price and quality.
The Hotel is full with german youngs, who are awfully noisy even at night until 4 a.m. One morning a room-telephone was in the pool. Generally some of young friends did foam party in the swimming pool. We did not really used the pool after that. The hotel staff did not mind at all.

The meals are a bit poor, never cakes, but always fruits.
The beach is 5 minutes walk and is very nice, the sea too.
I don't recommend to families, and adult couples.
