“Good Value For The Price You Pay... Don't Expect Too Much.”
On reading reviews, I was a little apprehensive but I am now certain that most people just expect too much; I decided to write this review to try to give a fair opinion of the hotel.
The hotel is split into two complexes across the road from each other, Las Olas II is a self catering complex with a pool. I didn't stay here so I am unsure of the room quality and facilities. Las Olas I is the main part of the complex. It has 2 pools, a garden, a restaurant, bar and 2 pool snack bars. The main complex is split into 3 courtyards in effect, all the apartments surround either one of the pools or the garden. We overlooked the garden area.
The room had 2 single beds that were pushed together, we didn't find this an issue, the beds were of ok quality. The beds were changed every day except Sunday and Wednesday and we stayed for a week; 5 out of 7 days, which I think is more than plenty - at home we wouldn't dream of changing the bed every day.
The room led through to the living area which contained a Bed Settee, coffee table, TV (you had to pay through a coin slot so we didn't use it), a kitchen area that had a sink and small hob and most of the appliances (cups, plates, cutlery) you would need to rustle up some food; I don't think a lot of people use the kitchens as most people go all inclusive so you might find the cupboards a little musty and the cutlery etc may need a wash. We had a first floor room so we had a balcony which was lovely, it had a drying rack and 2 chairs and a table. The room was brushed and mopped most days.
The bathroom had a bath with a shower over it, the water pressure wasn't the best but fine for a quick shower, sink, toilet and bidet. The bidet is a sign of the time I think, it does need an uplift, especially in the bathroom but I found it fine for out stay. They provided some soap but it wasn't replenished so bring your own toiletries. The towels were changed every day, again with the exception of Sunday and Wednesday.
Overall the room was a little dated but was clean in my opinion, for the price it was fine. One drawback is that there is no air conditioning; we did struggle with the heat a lot and it was difficult as opening the windows resulted in Mosquitoes. My boyfriend insisted on buying a fan but I would have soldiered on haha. So I recommend Mozzy spray and maybe bring a bit extra for a fan, it was about 15Euros.
There were complaints about ants and cockroaches on reviews I read. I saw no ants but I did see 2 tiny cockroaches outside the apartment, there was bug spray provided in the room and that took care of them. This might really bother you but my holiday wasn't effected by them; all hot countries have cockroaches and due to the way the apartments are separate and aren't sheltered (each has it's own door that comes out on to an outdoor walkway) I imagine they are hard to deter.
Breakfast was served until 10am. It was adequate and served a range of foods to suit different European tastes. I can't remember the lunch or dinner times but again the food was good with a range of things - meats, fish, pastas, chips, salads, fruit, bread, rice... I didn't go hungry but I found myself having a bit of a mishmash of food that I wouldn't usually eat together. The deserts were mostly the same everyday; some sort of cake with different coloured icing and a few other things. A freezer appeared half way through our stay with little ice creams in it, this solved the desert problem for me. We ate out a few times for a change, but we had planned to do this anyway.
To get drinks you had to come out of the restaurant and into the bar, where you could only get one drink at a time - I understand why the hotel had this policy but it was a pain that all of your group would have to get up and get their drinks individually. The bar man took a disliking to us and was really rude, I did see him be overly charming with some people and treated others as he treated us.. he was Moroccan and appeared to be the only barman they had, working every day, I imagine this is why he had developed a personality disorder haha.
On the first night we arrived after dinner and they provided us with a packed lunch, it wasn't great, a ham and cheese sandwich, bread roll, butter and jam sachet, some fruit and a bottle of water, but it was adequate.
The pool bar served snacks throughout the day when the restaurant was not serving food. They serve chips, burgers and toasties. It was really handy and tasted surprisingly good! Again one of the staff was a bit miserable but the lifeguard was really nice and made up for it haha, he didn't speak very good English but being pleasant translates into any language.
I found the pool areas really lovely. The pools were salt water so bring the goggles if you're sensitive to it. There were plenty of sun loungers and the pool was cleaned regularly - all of this nonsense about it not being cleaned isn't true. Not around the actual pool but generally there are a few cracked tiles around but abroad things like that aren't thought a lot of. The gardens were lovely, some really lovely flowers about and they were well maintained. In the garden we found a 'punto de gatos' which I nicknamed a cat tent! There are a few cats around but they do not mither you for food and are well fed. They are well looked after, and after reading the information on the tent it explained that they had all been neutered.
The hotel is about a 10 minute walk to the harbour. Along the route, or in fact after about 1 minute of walking, you will hit the main strip and there are restaurants and shops all along it. The harbour has some great boat trips on offer. The water is unbelievably clean in the harbour too, crystal clear. The beaches aren't the best as it is a harbour but it really worthwhile taking a trip to the sand dunes just outside of Corralejo - they are amazing. There are also camel rides there for 7Euros for about 30minutes. The sea is very cold a can be a little choppy depending on what part of the coastline it is. It is 3Euros per sunbed and umbrella on this beach.
The reception staff were very friendly. The cleaners were also friendly and most of the staff were nice with the exception of a few. The hotel isn't a long journey from the airport either.
I think I have covered most of the questions I had before taking my trip. If you decide to go to Las Olas just remember you get what you pay for! If your holiday depends solely on the hotel being completely perfect then don't come here, but it does make a great base. Have a good trip :)
