We stayed at the 5-star boutique Gran Hotel Son Net last week for one night, after attending a concert in the hotel by Spanish pianist David Gómez. And we’ll certainly go back. Don’t be put off by the Gran Hotel part of the name: the property is luxurious and stylish but it’s not stuffy and you can feel comfortably at home here. In fact, the place was once the family home of the owner - who also owns Chateau Eza in the south of France.
If you’ve an eye for art, look out for the original works that hang in the hotel, by artists including Hockney and Chagall. The chimney lounge has a large fireplace, where a log fire was crackling on the evening we were there. And it’s not hard to relax in the stylish but comfortable bar, on one of the huge sofas.
We stayed in the spacious Ramon Llull room (all rooms are named after a prominent person from Mallorca’s past). Things we particularly noted were the comfortable beds (I want one of those pillows), generous wardrobe space and padded hangers, efficient heating system, and the rocking chair placed by the window. In the large marbled bathroom, we were pleased to find L’Occitane toiletries, a large bath (taps in the middle on one side) and a huge shower cubicle.
When we opened the shutters next morning, we experienced the full benefit of the hotel’s fantastic position, on a hilltop looking over the small village of Puigpunyent and backed by the foothills of the Tramuntana mountain range (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
This is the first winter that the hotel has stayed open (many Mallorcan hotels close over the winter months) and it’s certainly a romantic place to spend a cosy winter break - in a part of Mallorca that will surprise anyone who associates the island only with beach summer holidays.
