“Not Impressed!”

Having previously written a glowing review of this establishment we went back there again at the beginning of July 2011 for two weeks.Everything was as expected and enjoyable up until the last day of our holidays. Around lunchtime someone has defecated in the kiddies pool and either the same person or another had defecated in the adult pool.
Instead of closing the pool for the remainder of the day the faeces was removed with the pool scoop and the pool staff carried on as though this was a normal occurrence!. We packed our stuff and went to the beach. The strange thing is, there were adults still swimming in the pool and allowing their offspring to swim as well. They would be the first to complain should they suffer a dose of "delly belly" considering the opportunity for waterbourne disease to spread in the heat of the pool.
We shall not be availing ourselves of this establishment again. This incident was a real eye opener for us. never again.

Room Tip: Try for a top floor apartment

“Not Porto Colom but Cala Marsal and all the better for it!”

As others have said, the hotel/apartment needs a bit of TLC and could do with a makeover. However it was very clean, the staff were very friendly, towels were changed 3 times in the week and the beds once. The pool and surrounding gardens were kept very clean. There are daily activities in which you could become involved eg killer pool, darts, yoga but there was no pressure to do so. My only gripe is that the music from the bar area is played quite loudly, is on a loop (ie very repetitive) and was in the main targetted at a younger audience. There is a children's play area within the grounds. Also tennis court, football play area and squash courts. The former two are close to some of the rooms so there could be some (a lot?) of noise. Luckily no one used these facilities when we were there. Cala Marsal has a fabulous beach, again very clean. We booked self catering and ate out every night. In that respect Cala Marsal has few restaurants. However the one we found on our first night was very good- Ca'n Bernat and we ate there every night (how sad are we?). There is another restaurant across from the Cecilia where we had lunch, again very good food eg organic lamb chops You can walk into Porto Colom where there are more restaurants. However these are, in the main, more expensive than Cala Marcal, catering it seems for the sailing fraternity. I didn't like the look of the restaurant in the hotel, mainly geared towards those either on half board or all inclusive, although there seemed to be quite a few eating in it. It looked a bit like a school dining hall to me, very brightly lit with tables set out side by side. There's a local Spar, selling the basics, including beer, wine, ice and beach stuff. I would return, if I was able to get a last minute cheap deal.

“Dont be put off”

I read the reviews and I am so glad I went ahead and booked a week holiday for my husband and my self. We visited Cala Marcel 30 years ago when only one hotel and a few bars, the area has not been spoilt and the beach still out of this world. Ola Aparthotel Cecilia is EXCELLANT value for money the staff are helpful and friendly and work really hard, some people want something for nothing, but we could not complain the only suggestion I would make is to extend the dining room ,a bit like a staff canteen, It would help if an adult only area was added or in a differant area

Arrived early hours of Tuesday morning and could not believe the difference between the picture of the reception area and the reality, picture was well dressed!! Receptionist was polite and handed us our key.
The dissapointment when we reached our room was "big time"... Not what we expected. Shabby and old would be an understatement. Clean, yes, spotless is the only plus point. Bathroom: Toilet seat chipped and in my view, not hygenic. Bath cracked and a mix of tiles on the floor. Shower worked well however! Good pressure made up for the down sides!!
Main room: Kitchen area was tidy but very well used, The cooker an adventure to use. Small drying up towel only.
Living area: One set of bunk beds and two singles, one disguised as a sofa! I rearranged the "sofa" and single bed to make a double... On the subject of beds, foam on a box is a good description, well not to bad comfort wise though.
Thank god for aircon! That was fixed at 23 degrees and worked!
Food was canteen style, when the chef was given the chance not bad, otherwise uninspired.
Waiting staff: Well that had contrasts!!
Chris was the inspiration that they should all feed on, always cheerful, a smile and singing all the time. FAB.
Pablo at the bar could do with a sense of humour implant on occasion and well Ruben, RUDE AND INSULTING is all I can say about him. Ruben even made comments to guests two tables away from us that upset my wife, incensed me and the couple sat with us. A complaint to the manager seems to have fallen onto deaf ears and the girls involved were actually told that no apology would be given by him due to his shouted admonishment. A "schoolmam" telling them off was the treatment they recieved from her. This is NOT acceptable in any circumstances, all staff are there to ensure that ALL guests are looked after in a correct manner at all times. The manager's excuse was that he had difficulty in expressing homself in foreign languages, well Mrs Manager, this hotel caters for multi-nationals, GET staff that can communicate with them. Not good at all...
Enough of that rant, just be warned, Ruben can bite!!!
Beach, the other logs have said enough. FAB is the only word that can describe it! For all the use, reasonably clean and tidy, water was lovely and clear, those steps were a pain in the sun though!! Well worth it though!!!!
The end of stay shower in C Block showed the difference, for that I would have given possibly 4 stars as this was the level we had been expecting from the photos that we were shown!!!
If it was not for the incident and follow up I may have given it 3 stars, due to this a painfull occasion 2 stars is all...

Room Tip: Keep clear of blocks 1-4!!!

“Great Value for Money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2011

We stopped here for a 2 week family holiday with our 2 children, 15 and 12 year old's.

The reception was very good from the moment we arrived, we had enquired about upgrading from a 1 bed to a 2 bed apartment. They gave us both keys and allowed us to view both before making up our minds. I unfortunately fractured my arm whilst on holiday. They arranged everything for us to visit hospital, and regularly called to check how I was feeling and see if there was anything they could do.

We were a little worried about the food from other posts but this was not a problem at all. There were normally at least 2-3 meat dishes and 1-2 fish dishes at each meal. The breakfasts could not have offered more really, cereal, toast, continental, full english, yoghurts and fruits. The only problem we had was that on a couple of nights when the hotel was full we had to queue for a few minutes before being allowed to enter the dining hall, not a major inconvenience really.

Yes the bar area only supplied drinks in small plastic cups, but really this did't prove much of a problem, after hot days I wouldn't really have wanted to drink many pints of beer, the smaller cups probably made me drink a bit more responsibly, whilst still allowing the odd indulgent night! The bar snacks were just about OK, mainly crisps that tended to be a bit soft if you didn't get to the bar when they were fresh.

We didn't really use the pool at all as the beach was so close, but it seemed clean and was regularly cleaned in the mornings. There seemed to be plenty of sun beds, but you had the usual crowd who claimed a sunbed with towels, then didn't reappear for several hours!

The beach is really only a couple of hundred metres away, we were there every day. It's a beautiful cove with gently shelving beach, probably about 100m out at sea before you can't really stand in the water. The sand is golden and soft, apart from the number of smokers who decide that the beach is a personal cigarette tray, stubbing out the cigarettes and leaving them in the sand. There are quite a number of steps down onto the beach, so be careful (this is where I had my accident).

The rooms were cleaned regularly and towels changed, we had a few small ants, but they leave a spray in the apartment which seemed to keep them well clear when used where they were entering.

The hotel is really multinational, whilst we were there we met, British, Dutch, Italian, German and Spanish!

The value for money of this place makes it a 4 dot standard, the hotel and facilities itself probably rates a 3.

Yes we would go back again.
