My partner and I chose Hotel Bendinat for its setting, close to, but not in, Portals Nous. The main building and the traditional rooms in mature grounds right on the edge of the bay are beautiful. We were there for a 4-night stay last weekend (late Oct), having booked a Junior Suite incl breakfast, which is served outside (weather permitting) on the terrace overlooking the sea.
Some negatives:
- We were first allocated a 'modern style' room, in a concrete block in the grounds. Avoid this at all cost if you are after Mallorcan style. The room was large but 'contemporary design' was straight from an IKEA catalogue and had zero charm or comfort feel. The block feels like a private hospital and stands out like a sore thumb against the rest of the 'resort'. Friendly staff sorted us out with a very pleasant normal double room with private covered terrace, which was fine, though not terribly big, apart from a copious bathroom. They did try to charge us the Junior Suite price at check-out and after only a modest deduction I left feeling that we had been mildly fleeced.
- Some of the other traditional-style rooms in the grounds that we were shown instead (they claimed they were "full", which proved untrue) were like caves, with no windows other than the glass front door. They were incredibly dark inside and would not be pleasant to spend a (rainy) day in. Be specific about your requirements when booking and make telephone contact in advance, to ensure you get the right room for you.
- The pool is ridiculously small for a hotel this size/quality, completely misrepresented by the photos on the hotel website. No more than two people can get in it at the same time and two strokes is about as much as one can manage.
- Wi-fi (at extra cost) was flaky and pretty much unusable in our room (403).
- Breakfast was good, though coffee and orange juice should both be better at a hotel of this standard (and price).
- Bendinat is not served by the Palma 'Resort Hoppa' minibus, if travelling without hire car, and is off the beaten track. While that's part of its appeal, one either relies on taxis to get about, or faces a stiff walk uphill when exploring the area.
For the setting alone we would return, though wonderful value for money Bendinat honestly isn't.
Room Tip: Specify 'Mallorcan' style, if you want the best of Bendinat. Go for an upstairs room for vie...
