Just returned from a week at the Hipico. I had no idea it had only just opened! I booked based on price and reviews on here from last year and the risk was that even if the hotel standards had changed since, the unbeatable location cannot.
The +tives:
Location: just as other reviewers have said - Marina 3 mins one way; shops/bars/restaurants 5 mins the other, small beach 10 mins, larger one 15.
Across road = supermarket and Schooners Bar which is actually quite classy, not a plastic tables & chair type 'British Pub'.
Price: it's a cheap 2 star - you get what you pay for
Facilities: pool, ample sunbathing space, no fights for sunbeds, pool table for kiddies, 2 nice tennis courts
Room 108: this is the one I had, ground floor with terrace, round the back so nice and quiet. Huge room for me and 2 others, large bathroom.
The -ves:
Balcony design: The ground floor terraces are private, the upstairs balconies are communal
Breakfast: We only made 1 breakfast and the food was a little too cold, the coffee terrible.
Bar Prices: a little expensive, especially bottles of water
Note this hotel and indeed the resort cater only really for families. Young and lively it is not!
I have worked in tour operating for over 10 years for people like Airtours, First Choice etc and I can see this hotel has so much potential it is unbelieveable what could be achieved if someone went in there with alot of money to refurb and improve on existing facilities.
At the moment, what you get is a basic hotel with good facilities, it seems that the rooms can be a bit of a lottery but I got lucky with #108, the location is unbeatable and for what I paid, I think I got excellent value for money. I wasn't expecting much, and i was happy with what i got.
