Looking around for a cheap, short 5 night holiday anywhere led us to book the Amfora Beach in C'an Pastilla, Majorca. Personally I would have preferred Palma Nova but no matter where we looked, whether it was Ibiza, Majorca, Menorca or the mainland, it was all very expensize! The Amfora Beach was the cheapest half board option in an area that we would consider staying. Booked the flights with easyJet and arrived in Palma at 14:00, within the hour we had arrived at the hotel and were in our room. Taxi cost only 9 euro and took less than ten minutes.
Hotel is situated in a quiet sidestreet called Volanti, at the top of which was the very well known Hotel Linda. The pool/lounge bar also doubled as a 24hr reception. Check-in was quick and we were given a room on the first floor (117) in the main block. (there is a three storey annexe just across the single lane steet). Lifts operate in the main block to all the three floors of rooms, but not down into the basement where the smoking lounge and breakfast room is situated.
Rooms were quite small and consisted of two single beds, a dressing table, bedside table and a built in wardrobe with drawers inside. Modern double glazed sliding doors led out onto the small balcony with pool view and the annexe opposite. It was fine for what you needed -somewhere to sleep and wash.
You had to pay 10 euro deposit for TV remote if you wanted to watch the wall mounted TV, we didnt bother. There is no air-conditioning, and nowhere did it state that we would have any, but if you think you can manage in July without it, think again! Most occupants in this hotel, slept with the room door wide open and the balcony doors open - just to get some respite from the heat and get to sleep.
Breakfast is provided daily between 08:30 and 10:30. Never did the offerings change. Sugarpuffs, cornflakes or Muesli. Chopped pork, cheese, peaches, sticky buns or toast your own brown or white bread. Honey or strawberry jam available. Streaky bacon, scrambled eggs (or were they eggs at all?) and hard boiled eggs. Apple, orange and pineapple juice, coffee and tea. I managed to eat something everyday. It was not hote cuisine but it did us. Evening meals (18:30-20:30) were served at sister hotel Anfora on the beach front, a pleasant 5 minutes stroll. Each night we ordered a glass of red wine and a coke with our meal and it was 3 euro - not bad. Two soups and a large salad bar available for first course, usually two meats and one fish dish from the buffet for main course. All the meats were very tender and tasty. Dessert was a choice of three Ice-Creams , profiteroles or a small square of cake. There was also a fruit basket. Again all very edible and quite satisfactory. The beachfront at the bottom of Volanti has a few shops selling souvenirs and a few small cafes and bars. We ate lunch at Buttery which was on the right at the bottom of the steps when you walk straight to the front from the Amfora Beach. A tabac shop was just after that, the lady was British and made purchasing cigarettes easier. Next door was a lady who rents out bikes, we hired one of those four wheel ones - it was great fun and cost 20 euro for half a day, we nearly peddled into Palma on it.
Nightlife wise, this resort is really geared to the germans which we knew before, hence we were looking to go to Palma Nova. I did not really find it that bad though. Every night after we had our meal, we sat on one of the benches along the cycle path which runs through C'an Pastilla from Arenal to Palma. After that we would walk along to the left until you get to the Hotel el Cid and just next door on the front , you will find air conditioned heaven in Ricky's Tavern. The owners have been here for 21 years from Scotland and were very welcoming. They served food until late, though we never ate here. It was a very nice bar and not as loud and brash as some Brit pubs can be . The quiz held nightly at 10pm is a good laugh. I had heard of a British street in C'an Pastilla, called Vigili. We found it and walked on! Ricky's Tavern had to do after that.
Getting about in C'an Pastilla is very easy, it is mostly flat, especially the part where it goes along to Arenal. We went on the mini-train which runs along for a total of 3.50 euro each return. It is a fairly low key resort during the day, very unrushed, at night it is a little livlier but as I say that tends to be for the Germans. As it was beginning to head into high season the hotel became louder at night especially on the friday night. Lots of German youths making needless noise, as if it wasn't hard enoogh to sleep through the heat. Our fault though, we knew it was a german hotel in a german resort. If I were to go back I would go in May/early June or September. It was nice little break from the bedlam of work and bills.
