“A work in progress”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2012 NEW

Stayed 19/5/2012- 26/5/2012 with spouse on Thomson A.I .'Couples' package. First impressions were not great. As others have commented the hotel is down a tatty semi-pedestrianised street. Our taxi from Palma airport transfer did venture to the front door in the (very) small hotel car park. We arrived at noon and not surprisingly room wasn't ready. OK - what's on offer? - All Day Breakfast was on the menu - but didn't exist! WiFi was available at an eye-watering 30 Euros for 7 days (that got worse -see below).

Check in was reasonably efficient and we were able to leave our bags in the luggage room and explore. The pool is adjacent to the reception area and the beach is not even a stone's throw away and is an excellent sandy beach - very safe with a shallow sheltered aspect and is life guard monitored.

Room was, as others have mentioned, clean and recently refurbed. Everything worked and nice to get BBC1 and BBC2 on the flat screen TV. No drawers for clothes just shelves in the wardrobe. A fridge with complimentary bottle of water was good. Mini safe with charge wasn't, so we didn't bother. Bathroom new with excellent shower and the loo with glass wall - not sure why couple would be concerned about this?

Beds excellent and we had partial sea view (on 7th floor) as an upgrade which we were quite happy with.

Other amenities: There is a spa - but chargeable - massages, new sauna and jacuzzi. We considered this at 14 Euros for an hour's use but in the end didn't bother. Wife did treat herself to a head massage at 40 Euros.

Pool is small - but clean and no shallow end so can be used end to end which suited us. The couples only policy was definitely in force - we were amongst the younger guests at mid fifties.

Sun loungers not too bad. Most days all gone by 10 o'clock but certainly none of the 6.30 am rush that we've seen at other hotels. If you wanted to reserve a sun bed you could have your pick at 8 am. The reps claim to remove towels from unoccupied beds but we saw no evidence of this. As a fall back we were told that we could use the pool/sunbeds at the adjacent hotel which we walked through to get to the beach and which is another Luabay hotel. Seemed a bit more upmarket - certainly less busy and always had spare sunbeds.

We were on A.I. and would say this was the best value in terms of drinks that we've come across at a Thomson's hotel. Gin was either Bombay Sapphire or Gordons and Whisky was either Ballantines or J & B. Beer the ubiquitous San Miguel. Decent range of cocktails also available.

One main restaurant with buffet service. Decent dress code - only one plonker came each night in shorts whilst we were there - and he wasn't challenged.

Two chefs cooked meats to order and whilst the food wasn't fantastic it was very reasonable for a 3 star hotel (which is fair grading in my view). Plenty of choice and all hot. Staff generally friendly and helpful although at times a bit pressured. Lunch was a cut down version of dinner and breakfast had decent range of hot and cold cuts.

There is an Italian restaurant which we ate in once (on our deal) Not fantastic - no choice of starters - just as sharing selection of antipastas - 4 mains and 2 deserts so you wouldn't want to go more than once. Only open Mon/Wed/Fri and 24 hours notice required. Not sure why - the night we dined there were only four other couple in!

Entertainment suited us very well. Quizzes at 4 pm around the pool and at 8.30 pm in the bar - just fun - no prizes. Resident entertainer - Natalie - was charming - and sings and plays Sax. Jimmy was 'lively' and even maintained his good humour when one idiot pushed him, fully clothed into the pool, writing off his phone in the process. The evening entertainment consisted of either Damien - solo singer or various other small groups - all fairly low key but of a decent standard in the bar with the sea in the background - very mellow.

There's nothing to commend Cala Mayor itself - it's pretty run down and the best thing about it is that it's only 1.5 Euros and 25 minutes on the excellent air conditioned buses into Palma (or 10 Euros and 10 mins by taxi)

30 Euro deposit for beach towels - changed once and the WiFi was rip off in that it ran out after six days. Reception didn't want to know so had to fork out another 8 Euros for the last day.

Little tables for the sunbeds arrived half way through the week and one morning we were all 'entertained' by a builders merchant's lorry craning bags of pebbles over the roof of the lobby to decorate the walkway past the hotel gym - which looked very pretty afterwards!

I can't imagine that this hotel would be allowed in England as the lift, main stair and emergency stairs are all grouped together at one end of the corridor - which was a little unsettling on the 7th floor!

All in all we had a good time - the hotel was a very fair 3 star which is how Thomson's rate it, but we certainly wouldn't go back to either the hotel or Cala Mayor itself.

Room Tip: go for at least partial sea view or you may find yourself looking at the tatty street.

“A great Honeymoon!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 May 2012

We have just returned from our honeymoon at the marivent (14th-21st may). The hotel itself was excellent, very clean and met our expectations. The staff were very helpful and pleasant.
Food was delicious. The food is a buffet but you can also get as much fresh fish/meat cooked by the chefs for you.We also dined in the al a carte restaraunt which if all inc you can go once in the week- this was lovely. The beach is only a 2 minute walk which is great.
Natalie and Jimmy (the entertainment staff) are brilliant and made it fun -once you've met Jimmy you certainly won't forget him!-he's a great laugh! Daily entertainment through to Evening entertainment you were always asked to join in and felt included in everything, they had a variation each night- Damian who sang and played guitar/ keyboard was great, we could have listened to him more and wish him well in his career. Also Natalie fabulous singer!
Our holiday rep Alex was very professional, he made us feel very welcome and was always there at hand if any problems arose. We couldn't compliment Alex any more he even walked us to our bus on our departure on his day off!! he is a credit to Thomsons.
It is definately worth paying the extra for a sea view, when we arrived we were allocated a room with a limited sea view which was facing the hotel wall and was quite noisy. The staff in general were great just one or two teething problems, when it came to the waiting on staff(maybe need a few more in the restaraunt???) but i'm sure given a little time will soon be sorted.
The only downpoint is that the area the hotel is located is a bit run down. Also AVOID!!! the chinese restaurant (Pato Pekines) up the road, awfull food and even worse service( there were ony 4 of us in the restaraunt!). All in all a brilliant honeymoon and thanks to all the staff for making it unforgettable! Mr and Mrs Coupland

Room Tip: Book a sea view or upgrade and pay the extra.

“Not Up To Standard”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 May 2012

This hotel is not 4*. It might make 3* with a bit of work. We arrived to find the room not ready and were told to go for a walk for 30 minutes. The room overlooked the main road. The ones with sea views we re possibly reserved for upgrades or the numerous german holidaymakers . There is a definite problem with the drains and the smell is pretty awful. The food though plentiful was warm served on cold plates, and there is no microwave. The rooms have been refurbished but the ensuite is now open plan (ok for the exhibitionists). The hotel is also advertised in the Thomson brochure as Palma, it is in fact in Cala Major. On the plus side it is very close to the beach.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a superior or above room.

“The Good the Bad and the Ugly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2012

The Good
The hotel has recently been refurbished and opened 1st May and most of the facilities are new and decent standard. The reception area is bright and attractive and the staff on reception are quick and helpful and we were served very quickly and off to our room in a few minutes. The rooms are average size and have 'new room' smell of fresh wood and paint. The beds are king size and very comfortable as are the super size pillows. There is limited room for hanging and storing clothes but we managed with a few adjustments. There is no bath but a large shower which works very well and a toilet behind a glass door which some may find a little off putting. We were on the 4th floor in room 1415 which has a large balcony looking down onto the street (more of that later). There is a very large flat screen TV over the dressing table with lots of channels including many UK stations if you want to keep up with the news. The only mirror is opposite the shower recepticle which is a bit odd. The rooms were clean (as is the whole hotel) and had maid service every day.
The dining room is large and bright and although there is a limited choice of food most of it is of decent quality. Breakfast is standard with all the usual cerials, cold meats and cooked breakfast with a girl cooking eggs as you need them. For those who like sweet items first thing there is a selection of cakes as well. Dinner is buffet service with a selection of Spanish, English and Italian (cooked as you wait and pretty tasty with it) plus a Chinese night as well. Sweets were excellent with a large choice. Lunch is a mini version of dinner.
The swimming pool is smallish for the size of the hotel and there are a limited number of sunbeds which wasnt a problem for us but will be once with hotel is fully functional and full. The swimming pool is directly above the excellent public beach which is excellent so people who prefer the sand and sea will be very happy.
Evening entertainment is very good and the 'Events Team' (peviously known as reps) were excellent especially Natalie who was bubbling around all day in the pool area and singing very well (plus playing Saxaphone) at night.. The 'imported' acts were all very good and there was no real need to go out of the hotel (which was just as well)
The dinks (we were all inclusive) were good and the bar staff were very good although many are brand new and still learning the job and speaking littel English.
The Bad
Being new there are lots of niggling teething problems which the management seem to fix very quickly. The steps down to restaurant and bar area are sterep with no handrail on one side and two people fell while we were there. The hotel have put one on one side now and the staff genuinely seem to be trying very hard to fix propmlems. There can be queues in the dining room and as all the stafff are new there is a lot of settling in going on. Twice I had to take meat back that wasnt cooked including chicken and fish that was pnk in the middle. I have to say they work hard and by the end of our week it was obvious that more staff had been set on.
If you take travellors cheques with you on holiday it is worth knowing that this hotel has no facility for changing them on reception (no licence) and there is nowhere in the 'village' that will change them either. You will need to use your credit or debit card to the small bank on the main road.
When we arrive the mini bus driver dropped us off on the main road about 200 yards from the hotel and drove off leaving us o find the hotel. His reason was that it was dificult to trrun road neat the hotel. We were on the wrong side of a busy road with luggage and with a disabled couple who had no chance of getting across the road without my wide playing taffic policewoman and stopping the traffic to a chorus of horns and abuse. In fact it didnt look difficult to trun road but if seemed hit and miss whether they came down during the holiday. The walk down is through a shabby area of closed shops until you get to the newly refurbished hotels at the bottom.
The hotel is billed as couples but there were large groups of Scandinavian (mainly Swedish) youngster there who certainly caused some disruption with late night parties in their rooms. To be fair to the hotel management some of these people were reportedly evicted after being warned so well done management for swift action.
The Ugly
f you think you will be neat to Palma you really are not. It quotes a 15 minute walk in some literature but its 15 mins (10Euro) in a taxi. The area surrounding the hotel is best described as a derelict shanty town with nothing to see other than a few paveside cafe's and boarded up shops covered in graffiti. There is a tobacconist / newsagent about ten minutes walk away and a small bank but nothing else. Out balcony looked down on the main road and scenes of dereliction. Directly below our balcont was the entrance to the local Dicso / Nightclub and on our first night there (Saturday) and the following Friday there were drunken rows going on until about 4.30 directly (20 feet) below us.

Overall the hotel itelf is good with good helpful staff and a great entertainment team and they will probably sort themelves out but just at the moment it is 'evolving' and anyone paying full wack may be disappointed.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for sea view (1406/7/8 for instrance) as the roadside ones have an ugly view and can b...

“Great beach location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2012

We stayed 3 days after opening and most of the refurbishments were completed to the standard indicated on Thomsons website. Just tweeking left. Rooms and areas spotlessly clean with huge bed, great water pressure in the shower, fridge, aircon and small balcony. Toilet within opaque glass doors which some may find a little disconcerting but not a problem for us. Buffet food plentiful, bottles of wine from 12 euros and can be held over until the next night if any left! Area around the hotel a bit "so so", Illetes (appx 20 mins stroll) more upmarket. We preferred to catch bus into Palma old town in the evening. Buses (1.50 euros) at least every 10 mins, easy, clean and drop you right by lovely bars, cafes etc.Taxi 9 euros. Staff were very helpful. Pool area can get busy (care- no depth levels indicated) but only 3 steps to lovely beach with sunbeds available to rent. No need to pack beach towells as available from reception against small deposit. We experienced some construction noise from next door hotel which is also part of the Luabay chain but not too invasive. All in all good break in hotel ideally situated for access to Palma and beach.
