“Good for the money!”

Being a traveller that often stays in 5 star hotels (hing Kong, Sri Lanka, Egypt etc) I booked this as a last minute bargain as an "extra" holiday that was not planned/budgeted for. When we arrived (a 3 hour transfer!! but as i speak basic spanish the driver was entertaining which helped the journey) we were told we were in the Balmoral - "oh no" we said (after reading previous reviews). but our room was clean, we had a big balcony and a sea view. Yes the room was basic but we planned only to sleep there. On our first day we went down to the "main pool" at 7am to find people reserving spaces (sunbeds were locked till 8) by sitting on the ground and marking spaces with their towels - it was clear that a lot of people had been there for quite some time - and I am not talking minutes!! Not being our idea of fun we returned to our own hotel pool and that is where we stayed for our whole 5 days - why?? the people! We were surrounded by the most friendly Brits, of all ages from all over the country and our whole holiday was spent chatting and having fun with everyone! We found the entertainment team and bar staff to be friendly and all it took was a few basic manners to get a decent service - food was ok for what we paid the only staff who were "grumpy" were in the restaurant - but who cares! We have fond memories because of the people we met at the hotel/poolside - and its the first time I have been away and not seen a single pair of "skinny" mens speedo's on an overly large Russian at the poolside!!! Would I go for a 2 week family holiday - no, but would I return for a bargain long weekend - yes!! For those of you looking for a bargain - just remember a 5 day break at this hotel in peak seaso - on all inclusive costs the same as a 3 night break in the "rainy" UK in a travel lodge on room only...for me that puts it in perspective!

ok lets face it the rooms are basic .... staff were more than helpfull at all times .. and having stayed in a lot of all inclusive hotels ... the food was more than just acceptable ... it was exceptional .... with something for everyone .... lets face it if you want a full english at breakfast or fish n chips at dinner time stay in England for goodness sakes ..

Room Tip: top rooms over viewing the pool are best for entertainment value :)

“I dont like to complain but im gonna!!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

It rained very heavy on the arrival 24/9/11 and the coach flooded moving couples at the front of bus and driver just carried on. Transfer takes as long as the flight.

I read the reviews., got to the hotel, tried the "a smile works wonders" rubbish but still mizerable staff! I thought ok, its yet another bunch of tourists.. so ignore it.. mumbling please not the Balmoral and hey presto - yes. I wanted to see for myself so didnt complain til the next day. I paid £1000 for us as a family all inc but we broke up and me and my daughter went.

I met a lovely kind couple who kindly helped me with my case, as i had that and a bag and my girl in a buggy (14 months old - cant walk yet) Oh dear i thought, stairs everywhere. Covered floors with towels - i actually fell over the next day on the stairs with the buggy and all the chap did was replace the broken card for the door. I went to the main hotel which is the Chi.. smirking staff, suggesting I can upgrade for 40 euros or we are full so come back in a few days (this is a plot!!) I gave up!

You can go to the other hotels to swim and drink but not to eat : (

The food - if you want pizza with fish paste in the sauce or chips you will be ok. (I dont eat fish or meat and have lived to 41 very happy every other holiday provides something for veggies - these dont!) I ate for 1 week slice of tomato, cue, sweetcorn, bread and dry cheese or feta that tasted off with a hair in it. I lived on chips and cheese cobs for £1000 - mizerable staff and stairs everywhere. I am badly bruised all down my right leg with carrying buggy up the stairsI have taken photos and will be making an official complaint.

The restaurant people dont wear gloves and theres no food hygeine/food area staff are the most mizerable people i have ever met. The bar staff are also very moody, as if someone has just slapped them very hard (which was tempting) but the food was shocking. Nothing is labelled - Cold veg. I laughed out loud one night in bed when i heard someone coming home merry/drunk shouting.. "mmm cant wait for tomorrows dinner of deep fried broccoli" mmmmm haha.. this was the hightlight of my meal. Disgusting. I feel fat and bloated and ill. My baby girl couldnt eat much there either so i had to buy her jars at 2 Euros a jar - 3 times a day.. all adds up.

You will get help from kind guests but if you are on your own you will struggle with a buggy - however the other hotels would have been better - one level out of the lift and you are exactly where you want to be. They just want you to pay more.. Im a single mum now so having spent all my money to get there, i was upset/tired/hungry/ill and had a bad time. No one wanted to know.

I met a lady on her own who said she has a TV in her room and 6 (yes six) beds. ??

I stayed in Palma Nova in May and frankly all the food was labelled and you knew what you were eating, here.. its fish, fish and more fish with some god awful looking meats.. a token of cheese and bread with soup that changes its flavour with the mood of the chef.. once told a lady it was chicken and then to the next it was fish. (quelle surprise)

Whilst i was there a man was found dead on the beach and the Calas Express train had "damage" which was the only way we could get close to the beach. It was the final straw for me when 2 days in, a barman serving the all inclusive drinks coughing and sneezing into his hands then grabbing your beaking/plastic cup, thus me getting a bad cold - ear popping, couldnt swallow, headaches and sweats, etc.. then worstly my little girl got it which made her so ill. She couldnt eat or drink and i was very worried. I went to find a doctor and he wanted 90 Euros to look at her. I didnt have that - so basically for me, a veggie - the food was awful.

The place has a market and the beaches are impossible to get to with a toddler. (too many stairs) the hotel is dated but i didnt go for that,.. i just wanted a break, but found no decent food, stairs and snotty staff and nothing to do. (most mornings it sounded like a hospital with all the coughing and sneezing all over everyone)

The kiddie disco started at 9pm.. my girl sleeps at 7-8 then entertainment at 10pm.. not for me. I am sorry if this is negative but i cried 3 days in wanting to go home. The staff just make you feel like a fool. Mrs M Jesus in particular at the Chi hotel was a rude and ignorant so and so and i will never go back. They dont do anything for you. Theres no reception at the Balmoral. no one in sight!!

Its not a resort, more of a.. maybe it once was but there are developed hotels and places to go to that offer you value for your grand!!! The seating area reminded me if the Shining - the movie.

I read a note in the Chi hotel "Its an offense to mix your drinks" at the juice bar!! ?? The local shops had signs like.. "dont enter this shop with any other supermarket carrier bags" !!! What a mizerable bunch they are at Calas de Mallorca!

Positives - the people i met and the sunshine. I read on a review before i go, god help you if you stay there and i thought.. nah.,.. well he was right! Its not for me. Hope you have a better time.

Room Tip: Done accept the Balmoral or fall for the upgrade scam
