“Holiday 2011”

We stayed at the Cala d'or Gardens for a week from the 30th Sept 2011. We booked the hotel through Jet2 Holidays, and after our transfer from the airport which was different to say the least as it was e resort shuttle, going all over the island before arriving in Cala Egos, where like others we were the only people to get off the coach. The welcome in reception could not be faulted, and we were given our room keys, and a map of how to find our room as there are ten blocks in the complex. The rooms were of a good size and all faced the pool area, and were in a good state of repair for the time of the season. The rooms were always cleaned to a high standard. As we were on all inclusive the meals were good and there was plenty to choose from including full english if you wanted it, the only down side was that they could do with being abit hotter, but that is the foreign way with food. The pools were of a good size, and not to bad once your body had got used to the coolness of the water. The entertainment was nearly non existant, and what there was of it was aimed very much at the Germans, by a very poor entertainments person, who loved himself so much he was like a strutting cockerel around the German grannies.
The only other thing on the down side was the distance from Cala d'or its self, which according to the brochure was about 15 mins, but took at least in the mini train. If i went back to the area, i would choose a hotel in Cala d'or the next time, as there would be more to do.

“Its ok, not much to get too excited about!”

Just back from a week at this Hotel booked with Thomas Cook, myself husband and 4 yrs old son. We had a good time but were a bit apprehensive after reading the reviews.
Flights were good, transfer was good. We were the only family to get off the bus which wasnt a good sign! However had a nice welcome from the reception and given a map of the place and details of whats included in the all inclusive deal. The room was basic and our son was on a camp bed. The bathroom was nice and big with a bath and a shower. The food is average, a bit boring and bland but will fill your tummy. We ate out one night to revitalise the taste buds!
The all inclusive free drinks were ok and you have to acquire a taste for the wine! We enjoyed the cocktails and my husband liked the sangria.
The entertainment is a bit ropey and is as per the last persons review, parrot show, comedy routine, bingo and a reptile show! However my son loved the kids minidiscos and it was great to see him so happy even if he didnt understand the German/Spanish/Italian songs they played.
On the subject.......yes English people are in the minority but who wants to go abroad with a group of English people? We did feel a bit left out at times as we couldnt understand the announcements etc. We didnt stay around for bingo and had a walk into Cala Egos.
The Hotel is not in Cala D'or and its most def not walkable in the seering heat. There is a road train stop right outside the hotel and about 3 euros into town.
Cala D'or itself is nice and the marina very nice and upmarket, great selection of restaurants and waiters will order you a taxi when your ready to come back to the hotel. We had great meal in Porto Fino restaurant.
The sunbed situation is a complete joke, why on earth the hotel doesnt provide enough is beyond comprehension. We refused to play the game and get up at 7.30am to queue for a bed and used the plastic chairs and bought a lilo. In the evening there also didnt seem to be enough chairs to watch the entertainment and it was best to hang onto your table after eating in the restaurant. At one point the 3 of us were sitting there our drinks and toys on our table, my husband took our son to the loo and I went to the bar, only to return to find our chairs taken!!!!!!!
Overall the Hotel is average, food average and the pool area great. The weather was scorching and kept us all smiling. You will have a good time but make the best of it. We've returned to rainy cold England wishing we were back there!

Room Tip: Entertainment finishes at 11pm so I dont think any room is better than another.

“Minority report”

Well my husband and i are onto our fourth day of this holiday, and decided to give you an honest up to date appraisal of this hotel and the overall holiday in general.

firstly please understand this hotel cater for many different cultures, mainly german, dutch, spanish and italian, we are of only 12 british here, so everything including the day time and evening entertainment is not in english, and therefore is difficult to understand.

The previous reviews we read before coming are correct, there rooms are basic but very clean, the hotel is run down with broken windows in reception, but overall is the standard you expect from a 3 star hotel.

The food overall is good, yes its basic but they are catering to so many different cultures.

You do get small plastic glasses to drink from, and there is only one bar, yes that right for the size of hotel it is not suffice although they do serve very quickly so the queues do go down quickly.

There are large numbers of sunbeds, but unless you are there when they release them at 8am you will not get one, my husband was in a queue this morning of fifty waiting for sunbeds, ridiculus, so every day he gets up early to put a towel on otherwise you literally wont get one, many sunbath on the grass which is not really exceptable.

Now that bad part of the holiday, everything else is average for a 3 star so you do get sadly what you pay for, but the entertainment well the nightly activitity is beyond comprehension, its APPAULING, no thats a understatement. i can safely say we have seen bad before this is beyond the worst we have ever endured, so far our entertainment has been a parrot show, (this is only outside act) then we had karoke which is the entertainment team with a lap top one mike and you have to give your name and the song you want in advance, seven groups of people sung, or tried many stood there looking embarrassed with one person per group holding the mike, embarrasing, the night after that it was bingo, yes just a game of bingo, we walked out of this, and tonight we had a comedy show, which was the entertainment staff again, dressing up and shouting alot whilst falling over, and this folks is what this hotel classes as entertainment, we have two more nights to see what else they give us.

The truth is for the money this hotel is good, but i wont return as the entertainment is that bad, if they changed the entertainment i.e got some acts in, rather than inapt students working for the summer and invested some money in updating this hotel could be very good, and we would return, but as it stands, bring plenty of spending money as you really wont cope in the evening.

one final note its in cala egos a and area of cala d'or not in the center as we believe its a good twenty minute walk away, but taxi are cheap.

“Clean basic value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2011

Rooms clean and well air conditioned. Pool area well kept and spacious. (TIP buy a li-lo for about 5 euros and then you don't have to be bothered hunting for a sun bed.) Staff really helpful and any problems sorted very quickly. Food pretty basic and entertainment almost non-existent. Quite quiet at night as the all inclusive drinks stop at 11 pm. (Pubs and shops only 5 minutes walk away.) TIP don't take anything valuable with you as a safe costs 31.. YES 31 euros per week. BUT Altogether a good value for money holiday.

Room Tip: block 5 furthest from the entertainment location so quietest.

“Good 3* hotel but .....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2011

Went with a friend 9th July 2011. Overall had a good holidy. Good stuff first - Reception staff brilliant. Rooms large but basic, but very very clean. Sheets only changed once in the week but towels changed every day. Pool lovely. Lovely area. Transport all very near and cheap. Small beach 5 mins away. Little town 5 mins up the road with a few bars and restaurants. Main part of Cala D'or 10 mins away by little train £2 euros. (would'nt want 2 stay there though 2 busy). Bad Points - Food ok but very repetitive. Glasses in bar sooooo small and plastic, but you can get 4 cups at a time (why not just do bigger cups) which is a bit of a pain when u r by the pool and keep having to go up and down to the bar. Worst thing was the sunbeds. Everyone reserving them at 8.30am, then buggering off down the beach and coming back at 4pm so they can't be used all day. Not enough sunbeds for everyone. People resorting to lying on their towels on the grass areas. Really annoying. Did speak to Manager but he said it was an ongoing problem and he did not see what could be done about it. Entertainment team really annoying. Put music by the pool in the morning (using Celine Dion wailing out sad songs) really loud and kept turning it on and off. Evening entertainment awful, go into town. Ok for kids and the kids are there all night. Kids in pool even at midnight jumping off the walls (where r the parents !!!). All rooms have air con but it is switched off from 2am to 6am so can get quite hot in your room at night. Bar staff really miserable. Overall I had a good holiday but these points are worth mentioinging as it may put you off. ????

Room Tip: E-mail hotel and ask for a quiet room. F Block away from entertainment, bar & Restaurant
