I travelled with my boyfriend for a cheap relaxing break, and this hotel exceeded our expectations. The hotel was perfect, as was the weather.
Hotel – immaculately clean, and friendly staff in an excellent location on the beach. Lifts to all floors, although there are stairs, including some down to the beach. Pool and pool bar in both the Corfu and Skorpios.
Rooms - rooms are simply furnished, but are spotlessly clean. We had room 423, which was on the top floor, near the corner, overlooking the sea, and the view was amazing. There is a fridge, tv and air con in the room, and a hairdryer in the bathroom. Rooms were cleaned every day and we had clean towels daily.
Food - the hotel was better than we thought for a 3 star. For breakfast there you could pick from fruit, cold meats, jams, croissants etc, cereal, and also bacon, egg, beans, hash browns, mushrooms etc. Lunch was a mixture of soup, cold meats, hot dishes, chips, but you can also eat in the snack bar by the poor which served burgers, chips, chicken nuggets and baguettes. Dinner was varied each day, with a section for chef’s specials. There were always veggie options, and also a separate section for children's food. Being a fussy eater, I didn't struggle at all with food.
Drinks – you can chose from juices, slushes (alcoholic and non alcoholic), soft drinks, spirits, beers, cocktails and wine. They are all served in plastic cups when outside, but if you’re in the restaurant it’s in a glass. The measure are pretty generous, however the beer is served in a regular cup – not ideal if you like a pint!!
Entertainment – I’m not one for joining in but even I managed to get involved!! The entertainments team are amazing – especially Jan and Paulo, I can't praise them enough. All day there are activities ranging from water polo, football, volleyball, rifle shooting, and tennis. There is a separate kids club, which was open most days, and a special children’s disco at night. The children seemed to really love the girls who worked in the childrens club, and the activities they offered varied to finger painting, treasure hunts and mini golf. At night there was the kids disco at 8.30, followed by bingo at 9.30 – which offers serious money to be won. Adult entertainment starts at 10pm, and it varies nightly from Grease and Blues Brothers tribute shows, to magicians, and professional singers like Motown tribute acts. Quite often we would stay in and watch the entertainment rather than venture out. The entertainment is finished for about 11pm, then the bar would stay open for a further hour. It was all quiet outside from midnight.
Pool – there is a large pool at the Skorpios which is shallow, with a separate childrens section. It’s very safe for very young children. There is a pool bar around the pool, serving drinks and snacks all day. There is also a pool and snack bar in the Corfu which you can also use, but they are smaller than at the Skorpios.
Beach – the beach is small but the sand is soft and it’s a really safe bay for children. There are rocks which you can dive off, and the sea is so clear, it’s fantastic for scuba divers. In fact, you can see the fish without even going under the water. Because the beach is small, it does get very busy. We went down about 10am and put our towels and lilos down, but I should imagine in the height of season it would be a nightmare. There is also a beach further down past the Rocamarina Hotel, which is about 10 minutes walk from the hotel, but this is also pretty small. The larger beaches are near the town centre.
Location – the hotel is in Cala Egos, which is a quiet part of Cala D’or. The train runs hourly to parts of Cala D’or, including to the marina and town. The marina is gorgeous, and is worth the 25 minute walk. There are some amazing boats there, and some nice bars and restaurants, if a little pricey. The town is a further 10-15 minutes walk from the marina, but is worth the trek as the pedestrian area where the bars and restaurants are is a great atmosphere, and we found the food to be good. The Indiana Jones steakhouse in the town served the best all you can eat ribs I’ve had. Cala Egos itself has some small shops and supermarkets, and also has plenty of bars and restaurants. You can also walk round the bay to Porto Petro, which is a very quiet and small version of Cala Egos, and there really isn’t much there. There are plenty of places offering excursions from both Cala D’or and Cala Egos. There is also a bus stop and a train stop outside the hotel. We went on the glass bottomed boat to Porto Colom, which goes from the rocks by the hotel itself, and calls in at all the beaches on the way back. Cala D'or is a little more upmarket than most resorts in Majorca.
I would definitely recommend this hotel for young couples, elderly couples, and families, especially those with young children. You do not need to venture out of the hotel if you don’t want to, and this, along with the shallow pool, safe beach and entertainment on site make it perfect for families.
