Ubeda is a World heritage site, together with its neighbour, Baeza. With few tourists, even at the best time for a tourist to go, it is probably the most neglected but amazing city in Andalucia. We went from home on the Costa del Sol and it took four hours driving along excellent and nearly empty roads but it can be done in much the same time by public transport.
We chose this hotel because it had good free parking. and was very easy to find. It was a ten minute walk into town and only five to the bus station and we chose to use the bus to get to Baeza and to Jaen. Rounding the corner there was a shopping centre with a large Carrefour and other stores for room fruit etc. The walk into town was not difficult but not interesting until you got to the Hospital de Santiago - known locally as Ubeda´s Escorial. Then it was pedestrianised into town. Look at the Ubeda forum for detailed descriptions of the many attractions of the city.
The hotel rooms were a very good size and the beds extremely comfortable. televisions were large but only in Spanish and some German. The pool was in effect closed although there was a notice saying that if you wanted to use it to go to reception. Nobody did as far as we could see. Excellent free wi fi in the room.
Breakfast was a fairly typical buffet style but perfectly adequate and any that includes smoked salmon gets the thumbs up from me.
We spent a day and a half exploring Ubeda and this was more than adequate. Then a day trip to Baeza, described by one guide book as a town where it is always Sunday. Peaceful and very beautiful. I loved the University area and discovered the refectory which was deserted but in a lovely garden and did good coffee. Again lots of Renaissance buldings, well worth a look.
On our final day we went to Jaen. Clearly not a tourist city. If anyone has walking problems it is best avoided as it is on a hillside. Not a lot to see but the Cathedral is magnificent (and I left my wallet there so full of honest people) and the town museum we found the exhibits and paintings well displayed and instructional but it was so deserted we had it to ourselves. Spanish to a reasonable reading level is essential. In fact without our intermediate level Spanish we would have had a difficult time in all three cities.
