“If you love Trulli, this is marvelous!”

One of our trip highlights. You've got to love Trulli to make the effort to get here, but we had a ball.
Honestly, you can "do" Alberobello in about 4 hours. But, we explored the country side and I got up at dawn to shoot photos. The restaurant they used for full board (La Locanda de Don Antonio)was truly great. If it was in NY you couldn't get a reservation.

Breakfast is do it yourself coffee and pre-packed pastry in the Trullo (one Trullo, two Trulli). 1/2 board is probably a better choice here as there are many options for lunch. Free and easy parking.

Alberobello is a UNESCO World Heritage sight. See it now before Puglia becomes the next "big" tourist destination.

“Not worth the hassle”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 May 2007

While you can’t match the experience of actually staying inside a trullo, the truth is that all of their charm is on the outside. Our trullo was up a very long hill, unreachable by car, which was a problem with our heavy luggage. Inside, the trullo had plenty of space – kitchen, bathroom, living area, a nook for the bed and a ladder leading up to a single bed upstairs – and was decorated nicely, giving it a quaint, if rustic, feel. As in most trulli, however, the doorways are only about 5 feet high, so we were constantly banging our heads. The kitchen had most of the essentials
for making a cold breakfast, but no dishtowel, drying rack, paper towels, placemats, sponges, potholders, or other normal amenities one would need for cooking or cleaning. The cups and plates were badly cracked and chipped, and the only breakfast items provided were a few packaged biscuits, yogurt, juice, coffee and tea. Our hot water and heat (which were sorely needed, even in May) went out both nights; the first night we called the front office and the guy argued
that there was no such unit number as the one we were in. Once we explained how to get here (the trulli are spread out over several different streets), he came and fixed it (either the propane tank was empty or the pilot light went out). But the next night, it was too late and we were too tired to call again. (They did give us a discount when we checked out.) The shower/tub was of such a strange size and configuration that we were unable to take a real bath or shower, although we only had a few hours of hot water anyway. We don’t know if other rental trulli are more luxurious, but unless you’re really dying for the experience of living in a trullo and are willing to rough it, we’d recommend that you stay in a regular hotel.

“Great and unusual (and not in Bari)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2006

Great little "trulli" (kind of round cottages, with very few and very small windows). OK, don't expect luxury, these were initially modest village houses. The smallest bathroom/WC combo I ever saw in my life!
But it is definitely a unique experience. Very efficient, sympathetic and multilingual staff at the "take your keys and directions" spot.
For some funny reason this place is listed under "Bari" by Tripadvisor. While it is in Alberobello, about 40 miles southeast.

“Great Digs, Great Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2006

We were presented with a two bedroom Trulli on a side street in Alberobello and could not have been more pleased. At $50 per day it included a small kitchenette with fridge used prepare breakfast every day from items bought at the local mercato and butcher shop. The bath was clean and bright with plentiful towels. The only drawback was that the unit had not been heated for a while and it took the stone walls and marble floor quite a while to get warmed up--wear slippers!! Dino and Katia, our hosts, were most gracious. When the propane bottle was found to be empty they had their man bring a new one even though it was very late at night. The travelling market was just down the street and was up and running by the time we finished breakfast. What a glorious time barganing for everything from clothing to foodstuffs. We used Trullidea as our base of operations to scamper (in our teeny-tiny auto)all over southern Puglia from Bari to Brindisi, from the Adriatic to Taranto--visiting all the markets on their given day of operation. I had taken Dino some tools from the USA for his workshop and he thanked us with two bottles of the most glorious local wine. (And I usually don't drink wine!) I must mention "Il Forno di Cristo" a family run trattoria-pizzeria-bar close to Trullidea. It features a broad menu (both Italian & English) and super friendly service. Please tell them "Joe-the football fan" sent you! This well priced eatery is on Via Monte Sabotino right across from Guisseppe's "La Lira" bread and sandwich shop. Very friendly and helpful folks all. I will return as often as I am able to this little slice of heaven.

“Trulli Fun!”

The Trullidea was great, our trulli was clean, comfortable (the bed was one of the best I've slept on in Italy) and you can't beat the location - right in the middle of Alberobello - or the price, we paid 86 Euro for 2 beds and a small kitchenette. Trulli great! Definitely recommend.
