We stayed at the Hotel Ulisse in mid september for 8 days and we absolutely loved it. It's in a great location: it is close to the beach and the castle and 10 min easy walk to the port where all the ferries and buses go from and yet it is a quiet, peaceful place where you feel totally relaxed. The staff were extremely helpful and welcoming; they couldn't have done enough for us. It's one of the friendliest places we've ever stayed. It was a lovely atmosphere and made us feel very at home.
The room was very clean and a good size for a european hotel room. The bathroom was ok with a small, but useable shower. We paid for a room with a view of the sea and the castle and it was definitely worth it; the view was fantastic. However there is also a lovely large terrace with an almost 360 view of the ocean and the castle that everyone can use, which had an equally good view.
Now the food: it is all made on the premises and it's amazingly good and very plentiful. Breakfast is self serve and if you have "half board" you can have either dinner or lunch every day (the menu changes each day and you can pick whether to do lunch or dinner each day at breakfast). It's great and probably some of the best food to be had on the island- real Italian home style cooking and LOTS of it. Well worth it. You can even take a packed lunch if you're going on an excursion.
Other things we liked:
There's a lift and the air conditioning works well, the price was reasonable, it felt safe and secure. The pictures on the web are a very accurate representation of what it's like.
Notes:
You can get the bus to the hotel but it's difficult if you have bags because the buses are very crowded so a taxi is better (but we got charged 3E more than the set price)
There are mostly Italian and some German tourists in the hotel so most information is in Italian and German, but hotel staff spoke enough English
Free wifi was a bit tricky to set up, however the staff went out of their way to help us to get it working.
A great stay, we will definitely come back!
Room Tip: The views of the castle are amazing and well worth it. Get "half board", the food is AMAZI...
