“This should have been so relaxing...”

This should have been such a relaxing holiday. The location of the Solemar Terme is excellent. It is close to the port for a wide variety of boat trips, just a short walk from the main street with endless small shops ideal for an evening stroll, a ten minute walk away from the bus terminus where you could catch a bus to anywhere on the island and right on the beach for days when you want to swim and relax.
The hotel is clean, the rooms are clean and of a fair size and the food is excellent, although it is advisable to go into the evening meal fairly promptly as those guests who preferred to eat a little later often found that the dessert had run out.
Unfortunately several niggles built up to spoil what should have been a lovely holiday.
We had booked a room with a terrace or balcony. We didn't expect a sea view as we hadn't paid a supplement but found that our balcony was a small 'juliet' style bacony which we were not able to sit out on.
The pool is clean but unfortunately it is often invaded by local children who come up the steps from the beach and into the hotel grounds. Although the management eventually come out and deal with the invaders it often fell to the guests to summon management. We felt that our privacy was invaded and didn't feel that we could leave any belongings by the pool.
Before booking it would be very wise to check whether or not your holiday company includes sun bed charges. We had booked with Thomas Cook and, along with other guests who had booked with Citalia ,understood that sunbeds by the pool were free but sunbeds on the beach were payable locally. We were shocked to find that we were expected to pay 7euros per day per person for sunbeds by the pool. We refused to sign anything but other guests who signed were charged the full amount.
Do also check your final bill. We weren't too surprised to find items that we hadn't signed for ( this can happen anywhere) but we were very shocked to find that we had been charged 4euros each for limoncellos that we had been served at the gala and buffet evenings. We were staggered as these had been served to our table, on one evening during the main course. We had not requested these drinks and did not sign for them, we understood them to be entirely complimentary.

“Life is a beach”

Stayed a week in the Hotel Solemar Terme in July. It was HOT...We booked through Thomas Cook with Citalia. To really enjoy this place you need to speak Italian. Not much English spoken, and keep an eye on your bill. We were charged for using the beach (72 Euros/room) even though we opted for the Spa, which included the beach charge. This is fine, but our Citalia was supposed to include the beach charge. Also, we paid for Beach View rooms, but were put into rooms 402 & 404. These rooms are on the back side of the hotel and warmed by the sun 10 hours per day. The air conditioners did not work, and we had to go outside to cool down. After 3 days, we were moved to the rooms we should have been in. After that, it was great. What a difference. The beach is on the hotel's door step, but crowded with beach umbrellas and deck chairs. It was hot, but crowded. The food on the beach was great. The best part of the whole experience was the dining room. We were on half board, and we did not have a bad meal. All the staff look like a cross between Al Pachino and Tony Bennett, but the food was wonderful!!!! I would return, if the opportunity came up again.

“Right on the beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2007

We booked a two week stay at this hotel, via Thomas Cook, on line.
The Island of Ischia is lovely, an hours ferry away from Naples.Thomas Cook were excellent on the transfers, no worries there...we were met at the airport, taken by minibus to the ferry, escorted throughout onto the ferry, and met at the other end in Ischia, where we were delivered to our Hotel. Throughout the transfers our luggage was ported for us, and the couriers were friendly and helpful.
The Hotel staff were very friendly, except that English is not spoken by everyone. The staff try their best, but sometimes it is hard to be understood. However, german is widely spoken by the staff, so between us, we managed.
The rooms were very clean, and of a decent size. Thomas Cook describe the room as ' three bedded rooms' but there were only two beds ( there were only two of us anyway ) but it implies that you are getting a larger room. There was no way our room could have accommodated an extra bed.Thomas Cook also charge an extra £252 each per fortnight for what is described as ' a view' ie sea view. Our room certainly had a sea view, but it was right up on the roof and shared the view with the solar panels.
We stayed in room 401. The best rooms are on the second floor, front sea facing, but these were mostly given to the Italians and Germans, who l presume had booked direct with the Hotel, and paid the premium rates.
The standard rooms at the back have no balcony, or view, so l would not advise going cheaper with these rooms at all.
The restaurant was on the lower ground floor and this was lovely and cool. It is very clean, with separate tables for guests. The food is plentiful, and varied, with a fish dish almost everyday, and a buffet starter.Mostly cakes and ice creams for dessert.
The beach is right in front of the Hotel, and sunbeds for both the beach, and the pool can be booked for 6 day slots. We found the sunbeds of the Hotel a bit too close together, and so for the second week we just chose beds on the beach further up, and paid daily. Be aware that the beach has plenty of ' traders and sellers' of jewellery etc, and massage girls, bothering you mornings, especially.
Ischia is a lovely Island, so take a trip out, and have a look round. The gardens belonging to William Walton are very pretty, you will see Lemons weighing 2kg...amazing.You can also take trips by boat to Sorrento, Amalfi Coast,Naples, and Capri easily from the harbour, for a day out.
All in all, a lovely place..we will definately be going again.

“Repeat stays at the Solemar Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2006

We lived in the Naples area from 1990-2004 and came by the Solemar Hotel by chance. Off/in season, we would ferry to Ischia and spend the day on the little beach next to the Solemar and then on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends we would stay at the Solemar. Comfortable rooms, many with a scenic water view (especially the upper two floors), excellent food (buffet style), your choice of B&B or half board, pleasant staff, pool, sauna and with a large, clean beach. The hotel is within easy walking distance to Porto di Ischia, numerous other restaurants, coffee shops, nightclubs and shops. August is when most Italians take their vacation and so Ischia becomes an Italian destination but at other times of the year, many of the travelers staying at the Solemar and on the island, are German or at least Central European. Capri is a nice day trip; Ischia and the Solemar Hotel are where you will relax in comfortable, clean and safe environment.

“Idyllic Setting in Idyllic Ischia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2005

We arrived at Ischia Porto on the hydrofoil from Naploli for a 10 day stay at the Hotel Solemar Terme. We had been monitoring Ischia’s weather using the WeatherOnline internet site and a web cam actually situated on the hotel’s roof, so already had great anticipation of our holiday on the Mediterranean island.

We discovered the Hotel Solemar Terme through a tailor-made package with Citalia Holidays and the hotel lived up to their exacting standards. A minibus collected us from the busy port for an exciting ride meandering through the one-way streets of Ischia Town to our contrastingly quiet seaside hotel.

We were warmly welcomed inside from the narrow street to the Reception Desk, and whilst formalities with passports took place, our luggage was taken to our rooms. Finished in marble, wood and comfortable green soft furnishings, the lobby also contained a computer booth for guests to connect to the internet, and a secluded bar area in which to relax after a hard days sightseeing.

The hotel has two wings designed in an ‘L’ shape around a terrace and 2 swimming pools, one of which is a thermal pool for which you are requested to wear a bathing hat. The Solemar Terme also has a health and beauty spa which we did not get time to experience this time.

Our party had reservations for 3 twin rooms on a half-board basis. One room was side onto the sea and the second facing the sea, both with reasonable sized private balconies and excellent views out to the warm, clear sea with the boats and ships passing in the distance. The third was a standard room at the rear of the hotel with a window opening to small balcony. All 3 rooms had air conditioning, were tastefully furnished and decorated, and serviced to a high standard by the efficient and friendly domestic staff.

The private, clean, sandy beach is only a few steps from the hotel’s terrace, across a quiet cul-de-sac service road. Deckchairs are usually free to guests, but charges for reserving sun-beds and umbrellas may apply to some holiday packages. The area is managed by the bagninos who also run a first class beach café serving refreshments ranging from cold drinks through to an excellent cooked sea-food platter!

Warning! Leave enough room for eating in the hotel restaurant! The spacious air-conditioned restaurant is on the lower ground floor with windows to one side and mood lighting concealed in feature recesses to the other. Guests in smart casual dress are welcomed by the Maitre d' and directed to the salad bar to choose from extensive display of mouth-watering anti pasta and starter dishes. The excellent main and pasta courses (of your choice from the Table D'hôte menu that morning) are served at your table by the genuinely warm and friendly waiters. On two themed evenings per week your meal can be enjoyed to a background of live music. The Solemar Terme has a good range of local wines and liquors and, after dessert, you can retire to the terrace or lounge to order coffees and drinks from the bar, where the musician continues his portfolio for themed nights by playing the electronic piano.

In the morning you can waken (hopefully not by a mechanical noise problem with the lift as was the case when we were there!) to partake of a sumptuous continental breakfast with an additional choice of eggs and fresh fruit. A new day and you can enjoy The Solemar Terme all over again!

Must do's and places to visit: Island Tour by Boat, Gardens of Poseidon, Ischia Porto in the Evening, Evening Retail Therapy in Ischia Town, Bus Around the Island (day ticket), Giardini La Mortella, Ischia Ponte and Castello Aragonese.
